Listening to this guy return again and again to why real rock music isn't popular anymore was almost physically painful, and then at the end he starts talking glowingly about Greta Van Fleet.

Heavy, heavy Gen X/proto-Boomer energy.
Clearly never listened to oh sees
Seriously just roll my eyes at this shit.

There are so many great fucking rock bands out there. Countless. Why is it so hard for these guys to look for it?
And why should rock "come back"?

Maybe rock music was an enjoyable historic quirk, fuelled by the invention of the electric guitar, and it ran its course over fifty years or so.

Classic boofhead reasoning in which everything from when a person's teenage/younger years is "normal" (despite how idiosyncratic it may be), and any subsequent change is a deviation from the mean.
you guys are being deliberately obtuse. he's talking about rock being the dominant, conversation driving style of music. that ended a long time ago. i agree it was annoying for him to keep bringing it up, but his point stands.

even the strokes, white stripes, etc. did not sell anything close to the big acts of their day. is this it ended up selling 1 million. they were much more discussed than they were actually bought.

in reality, the last mainstream rock group was probably "use somebody" era kings of leon or maybe Brothers era Black Keys? i'm talking strictly in record sales and magazine covers. that shit is over, regardless of if you like your little pet rock band or not.

the real answer is we are all dinosaurs who like a bygone genre. i've learned to be fine with that. gigaton helps.

not to be a stickler but proto-boomer is the silent generation and doubt they know led zeppelin let alone greta van fleet.
What I mean is Gen X'ers who enthusiastically adopt the mindset of Boomerism.
hence the term "stickler." proto means precursor.

Mookie was so much better of a player than Pat Bev. It's a dumb and lazy comparison.

Guy sounds like a regular like any of us doofus you’ll meet at a preparty before any show but he knew enough and has the right questions and asks them the right way for the most part.

There’s one or two where you can hear them going not answering that and he realizes it too late and reverses for the save.

He did great overall

This was a really fun listen

Then I think we have different understandings of his point, which I take not to be that the era of the era-defining rock band is over (who could argue otherwise), but that this is both undesirable and unusual.

Right, it was interesting when it was brought up by Jeff or Ed that Mookie Blaylock (the person) did not have a problem with the initial band name, but it became clear they did not want to delve any deeper into what stopped that from being the name.

That wasn’t even the big one.

There was one blatantly awkward moment and it screeched time a halt and he changed course.
Think it was about Kurt or the Seattle scene thing
It was glaring but he knew and obviously prepped had his next question ready to divert

First they tell ya,
You're gonna lose your soul
Then they tell ya,
Find another home,
And then you take a good look around
And they stole your rock and roll
And once it's gone you never get it back
I'm trying real hard to be the shepherd.
