This one isn't grabbing me the way it has others. I need to listen more.

Re: River Cross
i think this is a song that has to hit you at the right moment to lock you in. Read the news, lay down in the dark, take a moment to reflect on where your life is right now and where you want it to be, and then turn this on

I wouldn't put this album above 8th place in their catalogue, but I'd put this song higher in my ranks of album closers

Really? You seem to really love this album and I’m kind of surprised you’d still put it near the bottom of their catalogueMs Harmless wrote:I wouldn't put this album above 8th place in their catalogue, but I'd put this song higher in my ranks of album closers

Re: River Cross
I really do love this album, for what it represents: the very best of late-career Pearl Jam, bar none, and an album I can include with the first 7; the fact that it doesn't *break* those 7 is nothing against the album itself, and everything to do with my having pedestalled Ten through Riot Act as "canon", equal first place in my ranking - my favourite albums ever, of any band; I don't rank them, I wouldn't know how; that means Gigaton is "at the bottom" of an 8, and not moving up by defaultStrat wrote:Really? really don't want to always associate this version with a Verizon commercial but I guess I do now...
that first live version into 'I'm So Tired' will always be the archetype in my mind... and love it
but oddly i might find myself avoiding this track on the album for a while .... I need time to disassociate it with Verizon

Re: River Cross
if this doesn't fit our current moment, i don't know what does.
Drifting off in the undertow
Can't spot a figure on dry land
And afterthoughts of safety
When in truth, none to be had
None to be had
I used to tell time by my shadow
'Til the thunderclouds, they took the stage
These days will end as do the light's rays
Another read of the same page
Wide awake through this deepest night
Still waiting on the sun
As the hours seem to multiply
Find a star to soldier on
Living beneath a lion's paw
Knowing nothing can be tamed
Can be tamed
Drifting off in the undertow
Can't spot a figure on dry land
And afterthoughts of safety
When in truth, none to be had
None to be had
I used to tell time by my shadow
'Til the thunderclouds, they took the stage

Re: River Cross
I appreciate the delivery, but, find myself wishing, on early listening, that Ed had employed a bit more of the far away, atmospheric & powerful vocal from Retrograde here.
It would have fit the lyrical theme throughout the first half of the song.
Save the more intimate, closer to the mic vocal approach when the plea for unity & perseverance takes over.

We still make records to be listened to — not that everyone will listen to a record track one to twelve in a row or side A or Side B — but we still make 'em in case somebody does want to listen to it like that, that's how we make em…

Re: River Cross
still having trouble with the percussion. and even the kalimba. they need some reverb, or they need to be moved back in the mix. something.
or maybe they could need to go altogether. and take the government verse that was shoe-horned in with you.
in other words.. i'm still liking the live solo version better

Re: River Cross
Loved the song, but, will admit that I did find the additional instrumentation a bit distracting on first listen. You're right, IMO, that they probably could've been a little lower on the fader. I LIKE the additions, though, they maybe could've been panned more to the sides of the soundstage to give some spaciousness?dprival78 wrote:still having trouble with the percussion. and even the kalimba. they need some reverb, or they need to be moved back in the mix. something.

This could have done with a more Bon Iver approach. I appreciate what they've done (and it may well grow on me as time goes on) but I feel it's not subtle enough of a mix.

when the dust settles this will be an Everybody Hurts style song for me. One I don’t listen to regularly to preserve its power when I do
