Opinion piece, but this does the basic explanation of why the confirmed cases number is useless:tragabigzanda wrote:Awesome animation

Re: Anybody want a Corona?
He's in a weird place; he's a surgery resident, so they haven't actually put him on the front line to handle any of the COVID patients yet because they have tons of general med residents to do that. He gets one mask per day. So last night while we were on the Zoom, he was in the on-call room on that COVID floor, but he realized no one had changed the sheets in the bed the last time someone had slept in there, and he had no way of knowing if it was someone dealing with the COVID cases, so while on the phone with us he hightailed it out of there and went to sleep in a conference room two floors up. He said on a normal day they have 4-5 people on ventilators, and as of last night they had 26, but they still had some spares. The highest-leve ICU had been filled up, so they have some people in critical, life-threatening condition in the lower levels. They are clearing out the NICU so they can put more COVIDs in there. He passed 20 rooms on his way to the conference room and estimated that 18 of them were COVID patients. He shared a picture of the refrigerated trailer they have waiting outside for the bodies. He's been at this hospital for 5 years and told us that it's been turned upside-down in the past 5 days, and there's no sign that it's slowing down.knee tunes wrote:What IS going on. Total hospitalizations doesn’t fully work, because some people are delaying or avoiding medical attention they would otherwise have received, and we are also refusing some patients we otherwise would have accepted. So a hospital that sees an increase of 117 admits over the same time last year might have also had 43 people who would otherwise have come in...but didn’t.

Re: Anybody want a Corona?
I had a box of N99s in my basement from 2 years ago. I bought them for leaf-blowing bc I have sensitive allergies. I wound up only using one, and so just mailed the rest to a friend who works in a hospital nearby. Their hospital is so low on masks, they told her team that they would receive 1 new mask per week, so to keep reusing them. And if not to wear a scarf.Simple Torture wrote:He's in a weird place; he's a surgery resident, so they haven't actually put him on the front line to handle any of the COVID patients yet because they have tons of general med residents to do that. I think one can sterilize these masks using steam.
still the whole thing is insane and if the projection is 100,000-200,000 deaths in the US and we're only at ~2,500 right now and medical supplies are already this bare it does not bode well for the future

I feel so bad for all the medical personnel. The true weight and stress of this is landing right on their shoulders.

Re: Anybody want a Corona?
This fantastic Atlantic article published on March 25th explains some of the issues with ramping up coronavirus testing in the U.S.simple schoolboy wrote:There was a throw away line in there about a shortage of materials/ reagents. Do we still have a shortage thats contributing to this, or is it mostly still CDC/ FDA fuckery?Bi_3 wrote:Before it’s drowned by Twitter, here’s what actually happened:
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/28/us/t ... demic.html
As the title suggests, it also lays out a version of what the U.S. needs to do to go back to some kind of normal.
How the Pandemic Will End by Ed Yong (the article should be free to read)
https://www.theatlantic.com/health/arch ... nd/608719/
And it continues on from thereThose tests have been slow to arrive because of five separate shortages: of masks to protect people administering the tests; of nasopharyngeal swabs for collecting viral samples; of extraction kits for pulling the virus’s genetic material out of the samples; of chemical reagents that are part of those kits; and of trained people who can give the tests. Many of these shortages are, again, due to strained supply chains. The U.S. relies on three manufacturers for extraction reagents, providing redundancy in case any of them fails—but all of them failed in the face of unprecedented global demand. Meanwhile, Lombardy, Italy, the hardest-hit place in Europe, houses one of the largest manufacturers of nasopharyngeal swabs.
Some shortages are being addressed. The FDA is now moving quickly to approve tests developed by private labs. At least one can deliver results in less than an hour, potentially allowing doctors to know if the patient in front of them has COVID-19. The country “is adding capacity on a daily basis,” says Kelly Wroblewski of the Association of Public Health Laboratories.

wasn't there something about us sending all our medical supplies to China about a two months ago? Would be nice to have now.

Meanwhile the president is attacking reporters again and on twitter celebrating his ratings.
I can see he’s trying to position himself to have been seen to get on top of this all while being able to blame absolutely everyone else if(when) it gets really bad and it will.
Americans are dying. And he’s back to blaming Obama and congratulating himself. About ratings.
The networks need to stop showing those briefings. They’re of absolutely no use to anyone except him and his re-election hopes.

As long as Trump draws ratings the media will continue to devote most of their time to covering him.dimejinky99 wrote:Meanwhile the president is attacking reporters again and on twitter celebrating his ratings.

This.
At some point someone should take a stand and just stop giving him air time.
