sequence your TEN II

Post by joostone »

They recorded sooo many songs early one that they easy could release another record between Ten and VS. Althought that never happened how would you sequence this fantasy record.

You may include: Wash, Just A Girl, Brother, State of Love and Trust, Breath, Alone, Yellow Ledbetter, Dirty Frank, Footsteps, Hold On.

You can't include: Leash (released on Vs), Chinese (not a finished song), 2000 miles blues (not a finished song), 'Evil Little Goat' or 'Let me Sleep'.

My fantasy tracklist:

1-Wash
2-State of Love and Trust
3-Breath
4-Footsteps
5-Just a Girl
6-Alone
7-Brother
8-Hold On
9-Dirty Frank
10-Yellow Ledbetter

The 'definitive' version of Hold On was recorded during the Ten sessions (the one on the Lost Dogs 'Unreleased Cuts' acetate). I would slip that in after Footsteps and bring it up to ten tracks

So we're allowed to use Evil Little Goat?

I know the list of tracks left off of Binaural is impressive, but I don't see how anything can top what was left on the cutting room floor of ten.

1. Alone
2. Breath
3. Hold On
4. Just a Girl
5. Dirty Frank
6. Wash
7. State of Love and Trust
8. Footsteps
9. Brother
10. Yellow Ledbetter

I wonder how this would work. I tried to sequence it as close as I could to the flow of Ten.

My first incarnation of 'Stray Cats' started with Just A Girl. Worked well as an opener :nice:

what are each definitive versions?

wash: alive single
solat: singles
breath: singles
just a girl: rarities unreleased cuts
brother: rarities unreleased cuts
hold on: rarities unreleased cuts
alone: rarities unreleased cuts
footsteps: jeremy single
yellow ledbetter: jeremy single
dirty frank: evenflow single

none of the above have the Lost Dogs rerecordings....with those sources we can create this fantasy record. We can even add some instrumental as alternative 'master/slave' :)

Breath and Hold On are pretty awful songs, IMO.

The rest do stand up to Ten, however.

I'm with you on Hold On, but not Breath - it's probably the best example of PJ doing 'uplifting'.

Agree with all the definitive versions suggested above.

Was it ever discussed when it came out that the 2009 'Redux' version of Brother features re-done Ed vocals (a la 'Hold On' on Lost Dogs)?

Obviously Ed had a problem with his original lyrics and thought by distorting his vocals everyone would think it was his Ten-era self :|

I love "Just A Girl". I think the main riff is really good and the chorus is awesome! Really cool guitar parts.

"Hold On", on the other hand, sounds like a bad Candlebox outtake.

I wonder why they chose "Hold On" to revisit over other songs from that period. It must have something to do with the songs' lyrical content rather than their musical worth.

Brother 4:02
Alone 3:35
Hold On 4:56
Breath 5:51
SOLAT 4:52
Porch-extended 13:08
Just a girl 4:51
Evil little goat 1:40
Footsteps 3:48
I've got a feeling 3:30 15:24
Yellow Ledbutter 5:02
Wash 3:47

In tradition of PJ albums the second half is pretty weak

I'd really love to get a full list compiled of alternate versions of songs out there, and where to find them. Like Insignificance having two mixes, and there's like 4-5 versions of Dead Man, but I don't know where to find a couple. Alone, Hard To Imagine, etc etc.

The acoustic version of "Hold On" from the Vs. reissue gave me a new appreciation for that song. It's not a masterpiece of a composition or anything, but I think there's a melodic backbone to the song that gets lost in the wash of the big rock arrangement.

I probably prefer about half of these outtakes to half of the songs on the actual record. I think "Wash" is probably my favorite tune he band wrote during this whole era.

Can't attest to the quality of the files but this link is still active.
