Gigaton: Official album thread

They had no idea what was coming, but boy oh boy is this an album for the current moment. The feel, the lyrics, the sound is ALL about re-connection with your own soul and those close to you, and trying to solve difficult problems.

It's not the best album ever, but I can't think of a more timely release.

Alright into Seven O'clock is amazing.

I'm in the enviable positions of having dug their work and believing they have never put out a bad record. Some better than others, but mostly accomplishing a reasonable level of success in impacting me. Shockingly, though, I was having some trouble with SuperBlood, an now I'm really digging it. How did this happen? Seven O'clock is really nailing for me the feeling that I had in the first months after Orange Cheetoh got elected. That feeling of drowning and gasping for air and trying to find a way out of an impossible situation, I finally found a soundtrack to it. Retrograde is going to be a monster live, very Gigaton-y but also has a classic PJ build up. While I've really musically and vocally enjoyed the last few albums, I haven't felt a lyrical impact in a long time, and the lyrics are really cutting through me this time out. Still having some trouble finding my way in with Who Ever Said an Buckle Up, but even those feel worthwhile having on the record. Last time out, I pretty much discarded Let the Records Play and SBM and never looked back. I don't have any of those this time out.

That is a monster of a post.

This album has given me the exact same feelings I had as an 11, 12, and 13 year old, devouring and dissecting and loving every single second of a Pearl Jam album. It’s an entirely unique and exhilarating experience. Fueled by some crazy basic instinct to embrace, and uniquely and deeply connect to this band’s music and lyrics on an emotional and spiritual level. Many songs since those first two albums have become wonderful and majestic to my ears, but nothing has ever hit me quite as immediately, honestly, and emotionally as those early impressionable listens, when absolutely anything was possible. Amazingly, almost 30 years later, Gigaton is having the same effect on me. I never envisioned a realistic future that involved me falling completely in love with the first band I ever fell completely in love with. Well, somehow, someway, that is now. And I’m again swept of my feet by the love of my life.

Also, please don’t think an alternative sequence is better. I’ve listened countless times, and the track list is perfect. Precise. And most impactful in its proper presentation.

You missed the perfect opportunity to reply: "alright"

I would be on board if Vitalogy, Ten and Vs did not exist. It really is that good. Hard to rate anything at that level because of the emotional connection and nostalgia associated with those particular albums. Every album that came later is not on the same pedestal for me. I believe Gigaton can legitimately claim to be at least as good or even better than the best of the rest.

the only thing Gigaton is missing for me are 1-2 really explosive, harder edge rockers. Your go, animal, last exit, brain of j, comatose, life wasted, wws, mym style song. It’s maybe my favorite pearl jam sub genre and it is missing. It pops up in moments of sbwm and the start of who ever said (the first verse), but thats it (quick escape is a different type of song and take the long way doesnt get all the way there for me). It may well have been out of place on the album, but I miss its inclusion.

Still great, though. Anticipate it being in the 4-6 range in the catalog. Upper mid-tier for pearl jam (and even lower tier stuff i like a lot) but who knows where this all ends

Interesting that you say that, and I guess I agree, though casual fans are saying to me "oh, I heard the new album is heavy".

they have an intensity to them, but a lightness that is unusual for pearl jam. its one of the reasons the album feels fresh

yeah, there is an intensity and urgency in the song writing, lyrics and performance. Just not a smack in the face like the old punchy rockers.

The lyrics really are the best in a long time.

And I see the visualizers in my head when I listen to some of the tracks- particularly on key changes etc.
