I for once, im grateful they dont have a quick punk song. Both SBWM and ND are so much better than that.

Re: Gigaton is the Best Pearl Jam Album
I am one of those people who generally really goes in for those songs (WWS, Comatose, and MYM are all legit five star songs for me), and they've been album highlights in recent years. So I do miss it.ilpazzo wrote:I'm really enjoying having a Pearl Jam album, that keeps unpacking more and more with every listen. It wasn't until I was listening to it last night, that I realized the album didn't have a real true 'balls to the wall' rocker.... glimpses here and there...but not a full song.blueviper wrote:stip wrote:the only thing Gigaton is missing for me are 1-2 really explosive, harder edge rockers. Your go, animal, last exit, brain of j, comatose, life wasted, wws, mym style song. It’s maybe my favorite pearl jam sub genre and it is missing. It pops up in moments of sbwm and the start of who ever said (the first verse), but thats it (quick escape is a different type of song and take the long way doesnt get all the way there for me). It may well have been out of place on the album, but I miss its inclusion.
Still great, though. Anticipate it being in the 4-6 range in the catalog. Upper mid-tier for pearl jam (and even lower tier stuff i like a lot) but who knows where this all ends
I really think this is because we are getting mature Pearl Jam as opposed to the twenty-somethings grunge guys from the early 90s.
I agree this might be a sign of pearl jam aging gracefully. By No Code they had phased out of the track one-two gut punch that they started their albums with, and may now be content not including a real explosive song on an album. While I may miss having a track like this (or do I, since it took 10+ listens to realize it doesn't exist on Gigaton?) it seems that they made a real, concentrated effort to work within their individual ranges at this point and time in their life/career, and gave us a really solid album by doing so.
But again, not sure it would have fit on the album. What we have is still great

Re: The Official GIGATON Thread
Can anyone confirm for me, is the artwork for the vinyl the same as for the CD? If so, I think I might just keep my vinyl in the plastic.

I was surprised when it was intimated that Who Ever Said was a rocker a la Go or Last Exit. The chorus is pure pop.

Easily the best song on here, no? It’s far above the rest and the rest and pretty damn good.

Its is fucking awesome but this album has other songs that are so good...i mean DOTC is just incredible. Im also considering Who Ever Said to enter that group too.Teeeeeekay wrote:VinylGuy wrote:Damn guys, i dont know what are you expecting but Quick Escape is the rocker i want. From the middle part i think 7 o clock, buckle Up and Alright are top notch. And River Cross too.

Re: Gigaton is the Best Pearl Jam Album
Seems like you're missing the short length more than the style. WES and TTLW (SBWM to a degree) are definitely the record's harder-edged rockers. Quick Escape trades the hard edge for Zeppelin-esque heaviness...something I haven't heard from PJ in a long while. 2-3 minute Explosiveness? Maybe not. But the rock is definitely there.stip wrote:the only thing Gigaton is missing for me are 1-2 really explosive, harder edge rockers. Who Ever Said is a pretty different kind of song, I think. Though it has moments that trend in that direction

I'd say WES definitely fits right in the "Last Exit" shoebox.

Re: The Official GIGATON Thread
I'm trying very hard to restrain myself from posting about this ad nauseam but Quick Escape remains my least-favourite song on the album.
It's the song I least look forward to coming up in the tracklisting when I listen to the album in full, and I always find myself willing the song to end much earlier than it does.
I like the band's heavier moments a lot - Once, Deep, Alone, Go, Blood, Brain of J., Comatose are all some of my absolute favourites - but this one just doesn't hit for me. It feels overheated and underwritten, almost a hangover from the Lightning Bolt period (with admittedly better production). The verses are OK but the chorus (not entirely unlike something like Infallible) seems like a wasted opportunity, there's no intensity, no tension and no release. The song is loud and powerful, but it feels like a purposeless use of that loudness and power.
I would happily have dropped the song from the tracklisting in favour of another Matt song, or (in a perfect world) one of those famed Stone Gossard rhythmic-things-that-butt-against-each-other rockers, e.g. DTE, Life Wasted, etc.
