Re: Never Destination
I know what he means when he sings it. When I see it written I can’t help picturing some old man, sitting on his porch, calling to his wife...maaaaw.

I will likely listen to this song for twenty years without ever consciously hearing the "gaping maw" and "Bob Honey" parts.

Re: Never Destination
I can honestly say when the Bob Honey part comes, before I read the lyrics I thought it was followed by thanks Martha Row, and I never tried to google that name. I just went with it. I still catch myself singing Martha Row even though that’s not it.Birds in Hell wrote:I'll take your word for it.stip wrote:It starts the verse after what is probably the bridgeBirds in Hell wrote:The what nowMs Harmless wrote:after the "gaping maw" section

Go with it. I’ll do it to honor Martha Row.stip wrote:i heard that too! It’s an entire section of the damn song. And the line is repeated multiple times.oneway23 wrote:It is if ya didn't know it was there!PHATJ wrote:It’s not even possible to miss the gaping maw part.

I've heard the song maybe ten, twelve times at least and still haven't consciously heard it.PHATJ wrote:It’s an entire section of the damn song. My attention when listening to music just doesn't focus on lyrics in that way.

Brothaman....wish I could play it more often.. I've been at home with the Mrs for a month and don't have closed-back headphones. I'm not playing it on studio monitors while she's taking phone calls & zoom meetings for work. I've only been able to hear the record a few times, and haven't been able to really immerse myself in the lyrics yet.PHATJ wrote:It’s an entire section of the damn song. I'll be sure to zero in for that part the next time I listen.

Understandable. I’m not married and I haven’t listened on headphones once.oneway23 wrote:Brothaman....wish I could play it more often.. Re: Never Destination
It seems hard to believe you have completely missed all of this:Birds in Hell wrote:I've heard the song maybe ten, twelve times at least and still haven't consciously heard it.PHATJ wrote:It’s an entire section of the damn song. My attention when listening to music just doesn't focus on lyrics in that way.
“When you make the drop, the gaping maw
When you make the drop, the gaping maw
Makes us alive, should we survive
When you make the drop, the gaping maw
Keeps us alive, survive
When you make the drop, the gaping maw“
I mean, it comes with a musical change. The lyric is repeated 4 times in a six line stanza. It’s a strange word to sing at all, let alone that many times in a single stanza. It’s one of the most clearly different and attention grabbing sections of the song. I can’t imagine hearing it more than maybe a couple times without picking up on it. It’s like saying you didn’t catch the “dix” lyric in DOTC after a dozen listens. It makes me wonder if you actually hear the songs you listen to!
