yeah it's great; I used to see this "everything falls apart" type of ending as a real hallmark of PJ's music, but they've been so obsessed with clean precision in recent times, they wouldn't have tried something like this; I'm glad they loosened up on this album

Well they’re bastards for fade outs. It’s all fade outs on the best songs too faithful evolution

Waaaaah

I’d prefer this ending
you're right, yes

Ending on this one is so great. Can't wait to see them expand it live (If/when that ever happens).
We still make records to be listened to — not that everyone will listen to a record track one to twelve in a row or side A or Side B — but we still make 'em in case somebody does want to listen to it like that, that's how we make em…

You'd think this, but honestly, name a PJ original track since DTE that has been played live and is a lot more creative, expansive or has been tagged or jammed in the middle of?

i get some of the naysaying over this song, but its groove can't be denied. a pearl jam song hasn't swung this effortlessly in awhile.

Because of those naysayers, I keep going into this song expecting it to be less awesome than I remember. But it is fucking awesome. Erry tyne  :D 8-)

Ha! I think your experience with this album and my own are similar. It’s such a glorious and unexpected development in my late era Pearl Jam fandom to be able to just enjoy “on the face of it.”

I really like this song so this isn't meant as a criticism: I still can't get around the feeling that this sounds like Def Leppard, or some other iteration of '80's metal -- that wordless chanting during the chorus feels very Pyromania/Mutt Lange-y, and while it's not explicitly mixed to emphasize it, the riff throughout and especially during the solo feels more metallic in composition than any other Pearl Jam song I can think of. The spoken word effect in the middle has an endearing low-budget-outer-space-movie vibe to it, a device used to the same ends on Def Leppard's "Rocket" in 1987.

This song feels like a modern take on a style of music whose attempts to sound futuristic now make it sound even older than it is.

It is so fascinating to me how people listen to the same things as me yet hear it completely different.

Also Josh Evans basically said in their rehearsals they keep jamming at the end

can you imagine trying to keep Mike to 8 bars at that level of ferocity?

I was a Def Leppard fan once, so I can kinda dig that comment. I think DL tried to hit this hard, but kinda never really punched above their weight class, which ended up being clearly a kind of lite metal glam type of rock. Pearl Jam has made a career of going wherever they want with that incredibly earnest and serious intent that Eddie brings, so it stands to reason that their take on that "Rocket" kind of sound would come with a lot more drive and edge.

Def Leppard was some of the first music I liked as a child so I really don't mean that as an insult at all. And I don't mean to suggest that this would ever be mistaken for a Def Leppard song -- it's very much PJ, they make it their own thing -- just that a lot of those elements are in place.

I don't hear RATM/Audioslave at all. This is way more densely layered than anything either of those bands ever did.
