Re: The Official GIGATON Thread
So, this is definitely a headphone go out on a walk album for me. Or, get the vinyl out and pull out the lyrics and read along. This is one of those. Last ones like this were No Code and Binaural. I think those two are transitional albums (I mean Habit, Lukin, Mankind, I'm Open are a string of subpar songs that didn't age well for me while the front side is all aces) while I think Gigaton is actually trying to compete with Yield and Riot Act in terms of being more self-assuredly Pearl Jam while also having that sense of adventure.
The last 3 albums have been "car" albums for me. With Backspacer, I could take a trip to the gas station and go pick up some food from a drive through and by the time I got home I've blasted through 3/4 of the damn album and had a hootenanny of a good time. With Gigaton, I can't exactly do that. 7 oclock or Comes Then Goes comes on and I want to almost stop the car and listen. Or, only when I've got some intentional "thinking time" in the car am I going to really dig into these songs.
This is good stuff, it's all about the setting for me. Man, the Coronavirus era is going to be all about Gigaton. Really specific time and place thing going on here with this one. We are fortunate to have this band. I can bookmark a massive chunk of my life with their albums. This one is gonna "stick" like hell. When I think of the Trump "hangover" and Coronvirus, and wanting to escape into my headphones and disappear into something that helps me make sense of this, it's gonna be Gigaton. Not that I really dig into many full albums anymore, so there's not much competition in that respect. But my trust on this band only continues to be validated....

We still make records to be listened to — not that everyone will listen to a record track one to twelve in a row or side A or Side B — but we still make 'em in case somebody does want to listen to it like that, that's how we make em…

Album debuted at number 5. Pretty terrible.

Honestly not bad at all for a rock album in 2020. I guess they probably expected to debut no.1 like Backspacer and Lightning Bolt did but these are different times.

Re: The Official GIGATON Thread
It's the band's twelfth top 5 album (all the studio albums plus the PJ20 comp hit top five). It's only their third album not to debut #1 or #2. The other two being Ten, a notoriously slow starter that only broke into the Billboard top 10 a year after release but eventually peaked at #2, and Riot Act, which also debuted and peaked at #5.

Re: The Official GIGATON Thread
they also did like no promotion for this album, compared with the last two.
