I'm usually a picker of nits, but I'm finding it very hard to criticize this album. I'm just so grateful that it exists, that it's as good as it is, and how perfectly suited it is for this moment in time.

Other than the repetition (Granted, that is a thing), I don't get a lot of swallowed whole here. I think the song Swallowed Whole actually has the most in common with is Who Ever Said.

I do see the Thin Air connections, though

well, SW is a "rocker" and Retrograde is a ballad, but apart from the lyrical observation of sounds / nature / the restrograde surrounding us, which is a similar kind of Romantic / spiritual feel so seems to have been written from a similar place, I think that some of the guitar / key flourishes and chord changes have a similar kind of spiritual grandeur to them; I would specifically compare the moods of this song, and the SW bridge section, which has this rising hymnal feel and a similar sonic palette

so I think I'd say that they're interesting companion pieces and as short movies they could be an interesting thematic double-bill

The flow from WES to SBWM - DOFTC -QE is fucking awesome. I dont think they had something this strong since Vs.

Swallowed Whole is a song I wish was on Gigaton instead of Lightning Bolt. I would love to have it with better production value and I think it would fit pretty well on Gigaton. The production is a shame. The intro sounds like it's made with Guitar Pro or something.

Vinyl, you a true G, and it makes me happy to see everyone so excited about a new PJ record, but, better than Exit-Circle-Not-Christ, or Sometimes-Hail-WYA-Tree?

Vitalogy has a great sequence yes, but i might love Quick Escape more than Tremor Christ. And DOTC is way more different than Not For You. And while i love the 1-2 combo of Sometimes- Hail, Hail, i prefer DOTC and QE to Who You re and In My Tree.

Im not talking about individual songs, but the sequence itself.

the flow in no code in generally is pretty weak, methinks. Some jarring transitions and I think that album in general has some trouble developing or sustaining a mood across multiple songs

yeah, but thats why i love it so much...the 1-2 combo of sometimes and hail, hail is a unique moment in their catalogue. The same with Off He Goes and Habit.

I always liked the Nothingman > Whipping transition. It’s perfect for that album.
