It is if ya didn't know it was there!
It’s an entire section of the damn song. And the line is repeated multiple times.
I've heard the song maybe ten, twelve times at least and still haven't consciously heard it.

My attention when listening to music just doesn't focus on lyrics in that way.
It seems hard to believe you have completely missed all of this:

“When you make the drop, the gaping maw
When you make the drop, the gaping maw
Makes us alive, should we survive
When you make the drop, the gaping maw
Keeps us alive, survive
When you make the drop, the gaping maw“

I mean, it comes with a musical change. The lyric is repeated 4 times in a six line stanza. It’s a strange word to sing at all, let alone that many times in a single stanza. It’s one of the most clearly different and attention grabbing sections of the song. I can’t imagine hearing it more than maybe a couple times without picking up on it. It’s like saying you didn’t catch the “dix” lyric in DOTC after a dozen listens. It makes me wonder if you actually hear the songs you listen to!

I'm the same way.

I often don't give a fuck about lyrics nor do I care that I don't !

OK, now I'm starting to think you're making this all up.

Its kinda incredible how this one grew up on me. I feel its such a cool song now, and i thought it was just mid par.

Again, i love how tight the band is...that middle section is BRY and U together..with a little of Undone.

Has to be said (really doesn't, but...), this pleases me a great deal
We still make records to be listened to — not that everyone will listen to a record track one to twelve in a row or side A or Side B — but we still make 'em in case somebody does want to listen to it like that, that's how we make em…

This song feels like riding in a car. The way it fades in, it’s like squinting and seeing a car coming in the distance down a desert highway, dust flying behind it, it rapidly approached and grabs you without stopping. Then you’re just along for the speeding ride until you get to, well, your destination at the end when you come to a stop.

Same here, it presents on the surface as a forgettable Eddie rocker, only you listen to it a few times and you end up not forgetting it.

There are fleeting moments during the verse when I find myself thinking it could be an early Elvis Costello/Attractions tune -- it has the kind of unhinged, half-melody-half-sneer that I would expect to find on a This Years Model B-side or something.

There is also a less fleeting moment in the chorus where it still very distinctly sounds like Huey Lewis and the News. And it just gets more fun every time.

I don't really hear "BRY," VG -- I mean, I can see where, if all Pearl Jam songs had to be shepherded into, say, 5 or 6 different categories, these two songs and some of those Trag listed would share a bucket, but it doesn't specifically remind me of it. The whole vibe and headspace of those No Code and Yield songs was just so different; I struggle to really hear any of it in the Gigaton material. To me, "Black Red and Yellow," "Leatherman," and "MFC" really do feel light and airy -- unburdened, and effortlessly nimble as a result. I think this song, while still anchored around Eddie's scrappy guitar playing, mixes in some piss and vinegar, some outwardly-directed snarl -- those other songs just don't go for that, despite some superficial similarities.

I do hear BRY in the middle of this song. It's my favorite part. But I also feel like this is also that common/authentic Pearl Jam-ish jam. It just sounds more like BRY than others to me. Then goes more in the Tom Petty sounding stuff. This has become one of my favorites.

tragabigzanda wrote:I think this is one of the better attempts they've made at a certain sort of light, airy garage rock song over the years, which I'd rank something like this

Black, Red, Yellow
All Night
Leatherman
Never Destination
MFC
Mankind
Don't Gimme No Lip
U
Supersonic
Ole
Bar Supersonic & Ole, I am a huge fan of all of these songs. I honestly think that this is one of the facets of Pearl Jam that I'm most in the mood for these days. Their light garage rock songs get a bad rap because they were done pretty terribly in the last couple albums (and it was a bit too prevalent in backspacer), but when they pull them off I really like it..

This one climbed the ranks for me. Im surprised how much I still enjoy it and in fact enjoy it more now than when I first heard it. It’s catchy in a good way, and I love that it has some Yield sounding parts.
