I think for a lot of people, this week felt like you were looking down the barrel of the gun, and I realized until I read this article I really have not been thinking about this more than a month or two ahead. I hadn't really conceived how this could just be the start of a very long upending of pretty much everything.

Yeah, but that was the intent of that. They never actually discussed how to restart the economy, it was just more on racism and inequality... though god bless him Singer (amazing human) tried :

Because at some point we are willing to trade off loss of life against loss of quality of life. No government puts every dollar it spends into saving lives. And we can’t really keep everything locked down until there won’t be any more deaths. So I think that’s something that needs to come into this discussion. How do we assess the overall cost to everybody in terms of loss of quality of life, loss of well-being, as well as the fact that lives are being lost?”

I feel like the discussion that Digster posted is literally the public debate you're calling for in your post. Maybe you just didn't like it? They may not have spelled out exactly how the economy reopens, but that whole discussion is about what a reopening may look like. Seemed to me that the conversation is premised on the idea that the economy will reopen before the risk of deaths is behind us.

No live events until Fall 2021 according to one of the guys in the article. Now obviously a concert seems trivial right now, but to think we would still not be able to have that type of normalcy over a year from now is brutal.

The Smithfield plant thing is such a great example of how rural conservatism protects its ego and stagnates its intellect by defining every single action and consequence in terms of an “other.”

Every conversation I had with folks back home for months was filled with complaints about media overreaction and unnecessary strain on the economy. Then it was quick fix drug rumors, jokes mocking social distancing, arguments that the disease could never take hold in a rural state, and pictures of themselves at restaurants and parties. Basically, if you believe journalists and experts (who are Others), then you’re the sucker.

Then the virus comes to Sioux Falls, and not one flicker of self-reflection over how they handled this thing has occurred. The question of “hey, while we were smugly laughing over the sound of other people talking....were we missing something important that was being said?” is repulsive. How dare you.

Instead (leans in, looks around to see who is listening)....have you heard? (another side glance) Those people at the plant? They aren’t white.

Texts I’ve received from Sioux Falls residents since the Smithfield plant story broke:

“Word is they have 20 different languages working there and they never shared the info that anyone was sick.”

“Plant is owned by China and considered an "essential business". WTF”

“Most of "those people" live in a very tight community and have large numbers of family members in one house. I fear the entire NE side of Sioux Falls is gong to be infected.”

“fuck you China for not being more transparent...you killed people and we won’t forget it!!!” (the person who wrote this convinced her son to go on his planned Spring Break trip to Florida like three weeks ago, then bragged about it on Facebook)

Nothing learned. Nothing reconsidered. Just another day spent reassuring themselves that they are both the heroes and the victims of the world.

Well on the housing side of this, sounds like they are really trying to get this economy open again.

Long story short: Fannie Mae, about two weeks ago, had allowed for certain types of loans that would normally require an interior inspection/appraisal to switch over to Exterior inspections while providing some Modified SCopes of Work to appraisers to limit their liability.

By the time they figured out exactly what they wanted and how they wanted loans to go through and appraisers to perform appraisers...

They have now reversed course and are requiring interior inspections on loans.

And people/locals in my community are still getting sick and dying.

Fuck this shit.

i had an appraiser come by this past Fri for a refi. Super nice lady - she said she was trying to convince them to allow an exterior. But no luck. So I opened every interior door so she wouldnt have to, and left the house unlocked and went to a friend’s backyard (sans the friends) so she could walk through solo
