Re: All Things Jason Molina
I understand this sentiment, but I don't feel that Secretly Canadian is using this as a cash-grab. The re-issue of "Hecla & Griper" (which included the first vinyl pressing) was announced before he died, so it isn't even really in the discussion. SC is pretty good at keeping prices down, so I don't expect the "MECo" re-release to be exorbitantly expensive. They said they want to try and keep his catalog in print to keep his legacy alive, and so far I've been OK with taking their word for it.kreng wrote:i don't know man, all these reissues seem a little too soon after his passing.

Frankly, when you're talking about such beautiful records (some of which should be landmarks) and almost nobody ever bought them in the first damn place, it's really hard to get upset about the idea that his passing might be capitalized on to increase the exposure and keep them from being slowly and sadly forgotten.

Exactly. It's hardly the same thing as a situation like say, an Amy Winehouse where a major label and the family is cashing in.malice wrote:I'd rather too soon than 5 years from now.kreng wrote:i don't know man, all these reissues seem a little too soon after his passing.

money and who might or might not be cashing in on someone's death aside, although that's not terribly respectable whoever it is... I guess I feel like Molina's music was just too worthwhile - I'd hate to see it not be available for a number of years... a former RMer introduced me to his stuff in like 2006 or so... it was all so good, I don't think I listened to anything else for months.Fuzzcharger wrote:Exactly. Farewell Transmission - but I listened to the entire album and there wasn't a bad track on the list...Simple Torture wrote:Do you remember the first JMo song you heard? (this is directed at everybody)

A friend--one of those musical sage, older brother types--gave me "Ghost Tropic" on CDR around 2001 or so. It was one of the first albums I heard that exposed me to the idea of music beyond the commercial realm.Simple Torture wrote:Do you remember the first JMo song you heard? Yeah, Farewell for me.
Regarding the reissues, I for one, can't wait to get the Magnolia reissue. I need a new copy, as my original was lost. But yeah, I think these are far from a cashgrab. They're probably helping the family with any outstanding medical bills and keeping his music out there for people discover. What's not to like?

Re: All Things Jason Molina
The first song I ever heard was "Translation," and I probably didn't hear it until early 2006. When My Morning Jacket was scheduled to open for Pearl Jam in 2006, I downloaded a bunch of their material, including the split 7'' with Songs: Ohia. For the longest time, I thought the track was by MMJ and simply called "Songs: Ohia - Translation"! When I realized it was another artist, the next thing I grabbed was the MECo record, and from there, everything sort of came in a flood. Fun fact: this was actually recorded during the Amalgamated Sons Of Rest sessions, so the background vocals on this are more than likely WIll Oldham (aka Bonnie "Prince" Billy) and Alasdair Roberts.

I think it was "Didn't It Rain" in 2008 but I didn't fall in love with his music yet. (Stupid 2008 version of me.) In 2009 I listened to the Lioness and liked it so much that I became a fan.

Re: All Things Jason Molina
I got hooked after hearing his collaboration with Will Johnson (Johnson and Molina). Great, haunting record with them splitting vocals one song at a time.
