Gold Digger is objectively better. But like Jorge said, man it's a hot one.

Re: R2: Smooth v Gold Digger
Fun fact: in place of the now-iconic "man it's a hot one," the opening line to the demo version of "Smooth" was "it is very hot today"

A lot of people don't know it, but Santana is actually the name of the band. It is led by legendary Mexican-American guitarist Freddy "Santana" Guzmán.

Re: R2: Smooth v Gold Digger
I actually really like the vocal harmonies in the pre-chorus, especially during "this life ain't good enough".

When Rob Thomas sings about being from "the barrio," the barrio that he is referring to is located in Landstuhl, West Germany, where he was born.

If you're only familiar with the ever ubiquitous single mix and you've never heard the album version, do yourself a favor and seek it out. It is a whole 4 minutes longer.

Wow!
On Billboard magazine's rankings of the top songs of the first 50 years of the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, "Smooth" was ranked as the number-two song overall (behind only "The Twist" by Chubby Checker) and the number-one rock song in the history of the chart
