Corduroy is my favourite PJ song bar none; I was lucky to hear it when I saw them in 2006 (Reading Festival, an excellent gig btw) and it just happens to be one of the very few vintage classics I don't think Matt ruins (he actually adds a lot of pushes and accents the original lacks, as Dave A played it much straighter)

In the few instances Dave played it live, he didn’t play it as straight.

The first time I saw PJ was in St. Louis in 2000, and it was the one show that tour (of 72) where they didn't play "Corduroy." I definitely went to that show hoping to get all the hits I'd been waiting to hear my whole life, and it ended up being a pretty deep-cut-heavy show. In retrospect it was pretty cool that I got to hear the debut of "U," and I loved the show, but a small part of me was sad at all the hits I missed. Thankfully I'd get most of 'em at my next few (three years later).

One of my absolute favorite Pearl Jam memories was being at the Bridge School Benefit in 1996 and hearing the amazing new acoustic arrangement of Corduroy. It’s on youtube. It’s beautiful.

Same.

However, I've seen it played as the opener twice and that is really obnoxious. Cheated out of two other songs that definitely won't come later in the set. The last time, they actually did the damn call-response in it. It's bad enough to have that included in the song, but made doubly worse by having a call-response in the first song of the concert.

I’d be willing to bet that Matt wrote this song (or the beginnings of it) for the new SG album that was in the works.

I don't mind having Corduroy first, but the godfuckingawful call and response has got to stop. It absolutely kills the tune.

And I agree, it's never gotten old to me.

The version on my Europe 2000 comp is pretty close to the definitive version with Matt. Amazing playing with none of the bullshit. Matt throws in some amazing fills and little ride cymbal bits that he usually doesn't do. And Stone plays differently at the end too. He picks notes that ring out instead of playing chords.

Probably my least favourite track. The chorus is pretty catchy. The high backing vocals (pitch shifted band members ala Ray Charles did on a track once?) are something I don't remember PJ doing before.

One thing I can't ever like is songs with double time/driving snare. I'm not sure what it is I dislike, but it ruins a song for me.

Josh Evans in Variety:
(Take the Long Way) has these layered background vocals from Meagan Grandall of the Seattle band Lemolo. The producer, Nate Yaccino, who Matt was doing demos with, was also working with her. So she threw some vocals on it just for fun. I certainly wouldn’t have had the creativity to go, oh, this Judas Priest/Soundgarden song needs some dreamy, layered, synthesized vocals on top (laughs). Because it evolved backwards from there, it just works.

By far the best Soundgarden song PJ ever did. I absolutely love everything about this song. It rocks my cock off. Splooge/dry
