I'm in this club too. I'm not sure how to really describe it, but there's a way that this song feels like a continuation of Seven O'Clock.Sgt. Re: Retrograde
I'm hoping I get there, but similar to Inside Job, this is a little too late 70's soft rock riff and melody. I love the ending though and woke up with it in my head this morning!EJ wrote:I'm in this club too. This. I agree. It feels exactly like a continuation of Seven O'clock.

there are these flashes of greatness that pop up prior to the outro, but they dont linger. This song is almost there. What is it missing?

Re: Retrograde
This song is the perfect accumulation of everything that Backspacer and Lightning Bolt accumulatively attempted to do. It is one song that encapsulates that entire decade perfectly and dismisses it with a lovely “fair well” of blistering drums, soaring vocals, and ringing guitars. Fifty.

how is retrograde remotely related to what Backspacer attempted to do?

Re: Retrograde
retrograde does deal with similar Lightning Bolt themes and would have fit well there. It would have been a middle of the pack song there

Re: Retrograde
I like cheese too, when it is irregular cheese (moments). This song actually reminds me a bit of Future Days in that regard (or Sirens), both songs I do like quite a bit. Right now I think I'd place both above Retrograde, but that may change. Fantastic outro aside there are moments when this really clicks with me, but they don't stick. That may change.
I like the song well enough. I'd 3 stars it. No bad songs on Gigaton. It just doesn't quite hang with most of its peers on this album.

Re: Retrograde
This song has opened up in a big way in recent listenings. I've always liked the synthesized strings or keyboard bit right before the song shifts into the long outro section, but was lukewarm on most of the rest.
That changed after taking the album with me in my daily drives to and from work. Something about playing it loudly in the car really furthered my appreciation of the whole thing, including the songs that had been eluding me.

Re: Retrograde
this is the one song that is actually held back a bit by the production. it already has some soft rock tendencies and josh really lays it on thick, even on the great outro. there's syrup everywhere.
though i do understand just giving in to the butterworth of it all and turning into a binaural pancake.
