Listened to Anima last night on my headphones, first time in a while I spun that one. It’s a pretty remarkable record. He makes synths and drum loops sound more organic than any other musician I can think of. Textures drift in and out, delays and reverbs and all manner of affected instrument send take what would be pretty sterile in almost anyone else’s hands and being the whole thing to life.

Mixing this record was either a huge pain in the ass, or totally off the cuff and they just let the chips lay where they fell.

my guess is this album owes a huge debt to nigel. i read in an interview that thom just had a whole bunch of tracks that he and nigel pieced together.

I've been reading Steve Hyden's book "This Isn't Happening" about Kid A and the influences on the electronic age of information (and vice versa). It's really good:



With that, I was listening to the Berlin 2000 show, which was among a handful of show that they played before the release of Kid A where they debuted the new music. The version of Kid A that they played is extraordinary. It's an even better version than the one that they released on the album.


Kid A can be found at the 49:06 mark.

Absolutely one of the best bootlegs of their career. In the top 3 of what I reach for when I want live RH. Very unique version of Kid A with some awesome harmonica jamming.

So with all the Radiohead talk in the other thread, particularly about Kid A, OK Computer, and Amnesiac, I started thinking about some of the songs from that era. We know Kid A and Amnesiac were recorded in the same sessions, and that songs that later appeared on other albums (e.g., There, There, I Will, Nude (aka, Big Boots)) were also recorded at this time. Despite the band, and in particular Thom Yorke, facing an unprecedented writer's block and the band generally never really agreeing on the direction or sound of the follow up to OK Computer, to me they were at their most prolific and creative during this time, which resulted in arguably one of the greatest albums of all time. I wonder, however, what it would've looked like if the band decided to only put out one album from these sessions.

I went and combined Kid A and Amnesiac, and included B-sides from this period (but I left out the songs that appeared on later albums). Curious how you would do the same:

Absolutely one of the best bootlegs of their career. In the top 3 of what I reach for when I want live RH. Very unique version of Kid A with some awesome harmonica jamming.

I find it pretty boring actually, in the sense that it sounds like it was recorded for a TV show with a very polite audience and a tentative performance, and is lacking the energy of shows to come on that tour.

It reminds me of a live BBC session or something.

I think Nijmegen is my favorite show from that era. That fucker is intense.
