What is a "cult band", exactly? I don't see how PJ fit with the definition of "cult band" I'm thinking of. They're extremely popular.

Maybe their following is cult-like?

I guess. Its more of a "lack of a better term" description for them and their rabid fanbase.

This is what I meant. They're pretty polarising, and I wouldn't say PJ are currently gigantic at all. But then I live in the UK, so my POV is probably skewed. Nobody really cares about them here beyond a tight fanbase and Zane Lowe.

I can't fathom how lengthy this thread would be if anyone here actually enjoyed Pearl Jam.
We still make records to be listened to — not that everyone will listen to a record track one to twelve in a row or side A or Side B — but we still make 'em in case somebody does want to listen to it like that, that's how we make em…

I would say PJ is moderately popular here with the general population. The younger crowd is definitely not familiar with their work but anyone over the age of 25 knows at least a few tunes.

I'll second this. Lots of hate here for Gone, but I always found the lyrics poignant and the music uplifting. I heard Ed do it at one of his solo shows in 2008 and I thought it was great as well.

I would say so. I'm all for a good pop song, but not a fan of the polish on top of it. Feels like its not for me, and for the fan who will say. "Pearl Jam? They're still around? Hey, I kinda like that Fixer song!"

I'm not saying Bob isn't good at what he does, i'm just saying there's no need for it.

I will say that the production from Backspacer did feel like a shiny object to distract casual listeners from the prior 9 years of Pearl Jam's output, so I will go ahead and agree with this statement.

It'd be short as hell, how many times can you say "Yay album! I am excited for this track, that track and those other tracks. Wooo" Which most people have actually posted at least once amongst all the other crap.
