What is a "cult band", exactly? I don't see how PJ fit with the definition of "cult band" I'm thinking of. They're extremely popular.

Maybe their following is cult-like?

This is what I meant. They're pretty polarising, and I wouldn't say PJ are currently gigantic at all. But then I live in the UK, so my POV is probably skewed. Nobody really cares about them here beyond a tight fanbase and Zane Lowe.

Don't they still consistently sell out arenas and get top-billing at festivals in the UK?

I hate em. I'm here because of Brenden "maker of significant music" O'Brien. These Pearl Jam fucks you keep talking about would be nowhere without him. Those albums are decent despite Pearl Jam not beacause of them.

They're popular enough...they're usually guaranteed to fill out Wembley and the MEN, but I doubt they could ever do a full on UK arena tour.

Their contemporaries (Green Day, Foo Fighters, RHCP) can usually do a full on arena tour and sometimes stadiums.

They somehow fill arenas, yeah, but they play here so seldom that I'd guess a lot of people see them based on old material and curiosity that they're still around. They only *started* getting top billing at festivals in 2006, and even though they've headlined a handful of festivals since, it's always seen as a bigger deal because Zane Lowe and Jo Whiley hype it up. The audience is still only there to hear Ten, really. They have their hardcore fanbase, which is probably a lot of people in a room, but not relative to the population I don't think. My perception is they're a lot bigger in Europe; Italy and Spain etc.

That's it. They sell out the very occasional gig but they wouldn't have the amount of rabid fans following them around that they would elsewhere. Anyone who would regularly follow them around for 20 shows in a UK tour is on the Pit or RM, I would think. Everyone else would think this stalking was very strange behaviour.

You could even get rid of the word 'guys', reducing the word count to a comfortable commercial twelve, and the sentence would be just as effective.

I didn't say they were on the ropes. I implied that they've had a mysterious media resurgence since creating two substandard albums, all of which generally doesn't reflect or represent public opinion in my experience.

FFS, I didn't say they weren't "doing fine". I am not trying to argue that PJ Inc. is in any danger of closure. My original premise was my qualification of "cult band". I still think they are that here, compared to say Europe, the States and South America.

Yeah, people lose perspective. Pearl Jam are more popular than all but 0.0001% of bands in the world, and I don't think there's anything special about their fanbase which makes it "cult-like"-- just about every band of their tenure has a huge contingent of fanatics. Calling them a "cult band" rubs me the wrong way. They're not obscure outsider musicians. They breathe rarified air.
