Way to totally miss the point. I never said he didn't want to be famous.
I think there’s a point to this. Kurt Cobain loves the spotlight, and unlike his peers who chose the moment to recognize and appreciate others, he used it to crap on bands he didn’t like. He also loved that his sanctimonious opinions were considered vital back then. He kept up the machine when he didn’t have to because he wanted to stay huge. He just wanted to keep his Street cred while doing it.

Nirvana’s albums and music were great, but he was placed on a pedestal and that was what was unfortunate for the time. There were other bands just as good if not better. Cobain would pay lip service to that but he never pulled anyone up with him. He just crapped on the competition.

Guys we’re talking about a dude who was only 24-27 years old during that time. We all were confused, awkwardly idealistic, and said dumb shit at that age.

I mean yes and yes. He said a lot of dumb things and yes he was young. But he also is remembered now as some principled warrior for good and right and artistry and I think that’s a bit overblown.

And I like Nirvana.

yeah i like Nirvana too, but even back in the day i was thinking damn, that guy is such an asshole. He was pretty tiresome to me even at that point, and i have never ever wanted to see an interview or something with him.
The doc that was released a few years back cemented that early thought.

Growing up and throughout school, I knew so many guys like Kurt. The same mentality, similar personality, the same sarcastic attitude about everything. I see a lot of my old friends in him when I watch old interviews of him. So in a sense I feel like I completely get what he says at its core, or at least the internal boiler room where some statements were formed. It’s just that it’s completely overblown and overly critiqued bc he was probably one of the most famous persons in the world for a moment in time. Which probably made him even more purposely sarcastic and sardonic.

yeah, could be. I dont know, i dont think about the guy much.

I always prefered the mentality of Jeff and Stone or the SG guys over Cobain. Hell, even Krist.

yeah, she was fucked up but that guy was already a slacker before her. All his girlfriends pay for his stuff and he was just there.

Again, the Buzz Osborne excerpt from a few years ago...i feel kinda like that.

What a thoroughly bizarre take.

I'm not sure there's anyone from that period who expended more effort trying to boost their favourite lesser-known bands than Kurt and Nirvana.

I agree with this. Wish he would have given himself the chance to grow up.
Great band right from the start. I agree with his comments about PJ. Buzz is sort of a dick too.

lol, i didnt miss any point. all that stuff about "he only wanted to be sorta famous" like dinosour jr or the pixies is bullshit. he wanted to be on mtv all the time. why do i think this? he was on mtv all the time. and i love nirvana. they are probably top 10 for me, but kurt cobain was full of shit about a lot of stuff.

eddie vedder? he name drops mudhoney in like every interview in the early 90s. as far as cobain, i know he's mentioned lots of smaller bands, but i know he's also shit on bands like soundgarden and pearl jam, so maybe that is where the comments come from.

Guess again.

Appearing on MTV did not = "mainstream sell-out" in 1991.

All of those bands were on major labels and made music videos and appeared on 120 minutes just like Nirvana did. I know because I used to see them all the time, and was already well aware of them before Nirvana hit the scene.

It was never Kurt's plan to cross over into excessive mainstream exposure. He was already booked to play tiny clubs and small festivals for months after "Nevermind" was released.

Dont worry im not arguing your point, you obviously know more about Kurts battle plans than i do, but im not sure what this has to do with it.

Im not sure they or really anyone was anticipating how big the record would get but its not like Kurt continued to play tiny clubs. After it got as big as it did they still pumped out tons of videos, were all over MTV, and playing MTV events and big festivals. So its not like he really intentionally tried to slim down their exposure.

So if you'd like to expand on that im all years, for sure.

Also, i dont really give a crap if a musician did or did not want to be famous.

Mostly, i just wish Kurt lived long enough for us to make fun of how soft he got and make fun of the poor artistic and corporate choices he would end up making. LIke all of his time.

Cmon he went from Sub Pop to Geffen and made such a radio oriented album like Nevermind. Made huge videos, lots of interviews, played huge arenas.
I have nothing against that, but the whole ¨i wish i was an indie band¨ from him, it was mainly bullshit. And he was a media darling. ¨The¨ media darling from the 90s.

Of course he was an ill guy, so its mainly sad.
