Elton John was miles better than Paul McCartney.
Elton was high comedy. Oof.

Sir Paul was pretty stiff, but Elton was a trainwreck. Indecipherable to the point of comical vocals, and that big old piano sounded like garbage in the driveway.

Perfection.

Absolutely heart-rending. Beautifully perfect moment

Love it so much!!! I was watching that show and even as a die hard somehow i had no idea Ed or the band would be performing!

i just had a conversation with my wife about this. i didnt watch this live, i went to the met game that nite (the famous piazza 9-11 home run for any baseball fans). i taped the special and watched it when i got home at like midnite. im a huge bruce and u2 fan so mostly taped it for them, had absolutely no clue eddie and mike were gonna be on. was it known in advance they were gonna be on? last minute addition? surprise appearance? i was at peak pj fandom around that time and i definitely would have been aware of them being on, but it was almost 20 years ago so who knows. other than letterman they didnt do any tv stuff around that time so it really was shocking when they came on.

my first thought of elton johns performance: "Is that a basketball net behind him? no way, that has to be for a mic or something"
second thought: "wtf does elton john have a basketball net in his driveway for?"

it was so distracting i could barely hear his performance

I think it must have been a surprise appearance...i was a die hard fan since pretty much the beginning and had no idea they would be on (although i thought there might be a chance).

Speaking of great performances that night, the Springsteen performance of My City of Ruins was so special.

They were advertised as appearing. I think the surprise was Neil playing with with them.

It’s a long time ago, but I was looking forward to their performance at the time.

Same, I was babysitting for some neighbors and I intentionally put them to bed early to watch it.

That performance confirmed for me that the song needs that 6 minutes of space.

Nice to have it on Spotify for headphoning. It’s a good recording of a strong performance.

I’d almost like to see if the tempos/mix match up enough to do a Betterman style split...use the first third of this performance, then go into the full studio cut.

Not because I don’t like the album version, but honestly just because why not. It’d be fun to see how the increased dynamic shift impacts it.

Also, I’m not really into the dunking on Elton, but hearing that performance via headphones makes it devastatingly apparent how not up to the task he was. Even the piano playing is a mess in places.

Yeah, that's the thing exactly. Nobody doesn't age out of performing. It's inevitable. But the flipside is, nobody's going to pass on asking a goddamn Beatle (or Elton John) to be involved in their Big Deal Telecast, and it's going to be very hard for those artists to say no. "Will you play my worldwide telecast for health care workers" pulls on your compassion and ego in huge and equal measures (that measurement is roughly one gigaton). So while I don't care for the mockery it generated in places, the performance does still bum me out.

I don't know guys, I'm watching Elton's performance right now and it's not a bad take on I'm Till Tanding. Buckwheat approves.

Also Mitch McConnell's Lady Madonna isn't as bad as y'all are making it out to be.
