Everyone agrees that New York State has had the most robust testing thus far; if the rate of infection is truly 55x the number of confirmed cases, as the study implies, that would be approximately 13.8 million (NYS currently has a population of 19.4 million). In NYC, it's even greater; 55x the current number of positive cases is about 7.6 million (the city's at about 8.3 million). Even the low percentage the article offers would mean 3.9 million out of 8.3 million would have had the virus.

These numbers are again ballpark and hastily done, but I think it helps to give an idea on what that article is actually saying. Suggesting 7 out of 8 New York City residents already had the virus in a span of a few months seems unlikely.

I don't think any of us doubt that the number of people who have had this is higher (more testing just finds higher numbers), but no way it's anything like those numbers.

but what's wild to think is as time passes how much more contagious this thing is understood to be. You can get it from breathing in people's breath, using the same bathroom as someone, touching stuff they touched. it can survive on stuff for days. it's really wild and truth is, with 'open floor plan seating' the norm in most NYC office buildings now; and how efficient companies have gotten by seating people closer and closer to one another - so long as 1 person comes in with it - they will basically infect the entire floor: breathing throughout the workday, going to take a dump, touching elevator buttons or door handles or people's penises in a dark corner - everything a person does during a normal workday. And same is true for sporting events, airports, train station, conferences, concerts - everything.

i could see the infection rating being at 50%+ in Manhattan. it is now understood to have been widespread by end Feb. What's a month+ of damage with everyone being up everyone's ass on the subway, on the bus, in the office, in the bar, in concerts, in conferences, and touching people's penises in a dark corner and contagious people being mixed in everywhere?
