Take comfort in the fact that I dislike The Fixer more than ATW.
Most people do... but seriously, ATW has its flaws but relatively far fewer compared to other Backspacer songs. People were locked into what this song should be before listening to it, so what it is tends to be lost on them.
The bridge/solo take the song into an area it doesn't need to go.

If the bridge was lighter, and more 'Yieldy' (like Faithfull or something), I'd probably enjoy the song as a whole much, much more.

Fair comment. That solo is needlessly bombastic. But it sounds good enough.

I think it fits, I kinda like the harmonized guitars.

Yeah, I just don't think it needs to be that heavy. I see 'In Hiding' as a good model of what this song should be: anthemic and soaring, but without over-distorting.

That's certainly what the rest of the song is, yeah.

The pre-chorus for In Hiding gets down in the mud a bit. No more than ATW.

I think the chorus of In Hiding is pretty bad, and everything else is great.

I wish ATW would click with me, but it just doesn't tickle my fancy. I have tried, but as of today, it's still a miss for me. Maybe one day I'll get it. Maybe I need to go back and listen to this album again. I haven't listened to it since we did an LAL on the old board (2 years ago?).

I'm listening to Backspacer now, for the instant shot of happy that I sometimes require. It's working.
