Same. I did like three songs, put it aside for something and never returned.

If you can’t enjoy Gigaton, you don’t like Pearl Jam anymore.
Come on, knock it off.

I admit it, what's to say?

basically 2020 is my least favorite album by the band

it's nowhere close to 2000 or 2002 or even 2009-2013

miss you BoB

I agree that Amongst the Waves is the best song on Backspacer, which places it around 90th best PJ song overall.

But the notion that not liking a band's latest album means you don't like the band anymore is objectively false.

I mean, I disliked PJ's newest album for the past 7 years, and it was never true that I didn't like Pearl Jam.

I think Amongst the Waves is the kind of song that maybe, just maybe, could have been spectacularly elevated by the type of approach to song construction, studio time, and production that was taken on Gigaton. On an album that was made to be full of short "polished garage" jingles with little room to breathe, it is severely inhibited. I feel the same way about Force of Nature, which I regard as a better song but of that dirty more grungy variety, as opposed to the attempt at anthemic that ATW is.

Force of Nature would work well here with better production and a spacey outro. It could replace Retrograde and the album would be better.

Gigaton is objectively (A LOT) better than Lightning Bolt or Backspacer. Being a fan of those albums basically means you hate creative Pearl Jam and what actually made them great. Good on you for not doing that. Gigaton is exactly the opposite. It takes what has always made Pearl Jam wonderful and expands on it beautifully and creatively, while honoring the soul that always was the backbone of this great band. If someone can’t appreciate or see that Gigaton is a modern PJ masterpiece, and that Lightning Bolt was an abject failure (with arguably a couple minor highlights, depending on your view of a couple songs), then they probably have just don’t like PJ that much anymore. And that’s fine. But the band that made Gigaton is the same that created all of their classics. The band that made Lightning Bolt (and maybe to a lesser extent Backspacer) just isn’t.

There's a lot more Lightning Bolt and Backspacer in this than you probably care to admit.

both of which are very good albums in their own right.

it is vaguely amusing how defensive Phatj gets about people disliking gigaton before jumping into these sweeping denunciations of these two albums

I’m not defensive in a “you don’t have the right to that opinion” kind of way, just in a “you’re wrong and here’s why” kind of way.
