We could order stuff from overseas, but it was advised against. As for takeaways - it's been 4 -5 weeks where they've all been closed

If these people don't get blowback for something like this, I don't know what to say. The extra $600 until July 31 obviously makes it more difficult to get everyone back to work before then, but in a sane world, taking a benefit like that away from people would be political suicide. I realize it's not a sane world, but if this isn't enough, what is? I'm not talking about the Trump crowd and their dear leader. Just citizens of IA & TX (so far), wondering how much they'll tolerate. I would like to think this can't happen in my region, but now I'm not so sure.

Everyone's lives have been disrupted, schools probably closed for the year, no one's sure if it's safe out there - and the government response is "get back to work, or else?" Seems like a bad idea.

I heard this morning the state of Georgia viral reproduction rate is 0.81; which I thought was surprisingly low. We'll see if that is the case in a couple weeks as things start to reopen.

“We’ll see” is doing a lot of work to pretend a mystery here. You reopen, and the reproduction rate goes up. Full stop. No other scenario. Germany’s COVID reproduction rate was .7 before partially reopening and climbing back to 1.0.

Well, late March and all of April were about getting this thing under control. I guess we'll know the answer to this question sometime in May. The evidence so far points to McP being right. And it seems like it will always be worse in cities, where most of the economic activity takes place, as well as big factories. No doubt there are parts of the economy that could probably reopen, but it's gonna be hard in the places where it matters to the economy as a whole.

This was always the goal. Bring the unemployment numbers down by force. You're screwed if you decide not to work in unsafe conditions. Trump needs this even though the amount that return to work is minisfule compared to the millions now unemployed

Despite broadening testing to basically anyone who wants it and conducting thousands of tests daily, we've had zero new positive tests in our state for most days during the last week (and those occasional outliers have been related to earlier cases, family members, etc - not unexplained community transmissions.)

Now running at seven consecutive days without any positive tests in South Australia, and only 14 known active cases remaining (and recovering in isolation).

I get the sense this coming across the board. It’s gonna be hard for employers to distinguish between “science says it’s still not safe” and “I’m still drunk”. Add in that some workers in areas that haven’t raised the minimum wage are making close to if not more income sitting at home, the motivation to go back to packing raw is pretty low

This might be the biggest pile of horseshit I’ve ever seen used to justify anything, ever.

So to recap:

1. Stay at home orders are an oppression of personal liberty. The Statue of Liberty cries over them.

2. Forcing people to expose themselves and their families to a pandemic is not oppressive, and is justified because who knows they might be drunk liars anyway.

3. The real problem here is that people might not want to risk death for pennies, having experienced life with the equivalent of a living wage....many for the first time in their lives.

4. Amazingly, there are people who can make all of the above arguments and never ask the obvious question.
