It’s gonna be hard for employers to distinguish between “science says it’s still not safe” and “I’m still drunk”.

This might be the biggest pile of horseshit I’ve ever seen used to justify anything, ever.

Add in that some workers in areas that haven’t raised the minimum wage are making close to if not more income sitting at home, the motivation to go back to packing raw is pretty low

So to recap:

1. Stay at home orders are an oppression of personal liberty. The Statue of Liberty cries over them.

2. Forcing people to expose themselves and their families to a pandemic is not oppressive, and is justified because who knows they might be drunk liars anyway.

3. The real problem here is that people might not want to risk death for pennies, having experienced life with the equivalent of a living wage....many for the first time in their lives.

4. Amazingly, there are people who can make all of the above arguments and never ask the obvious question.

Isnt the transmission issue about population density? Queens and the Bronx driving most of the numbers? The strap hanger crowd is far more likely to be infected than people who sit in cars or stand in intersections all day.

I'm not sure how likely that is; first responders often are dealing with the same density as everyone else, and on top of that, are constantly in situations in which they're dealing with the public, often with individuals who are ill and in distress. Even the FDNY numbers (which I'd presume would include their EMS workers, which are more likely than practically anyone to be dealing in close quarters with infectious coronavirus patients) is below the population average? I think the simpler explanation is that we're dealing with a barrage of inconsistency based on preliminary testing and results.

I believe I am talking about a group of people very articulately described by you. You (correctly, I think) summarized their view of the lockdown as:

The lockdown is a withdrawal of individual liberty, so the statue is not crying in the context of it being one the first things that early 20th century immigrants saw in America, but instead in the context that we have abridged the liberty those people were seeking.

But individual liberties aside, you also explained that the same group of people will feel (and are already feeling!) the need to literally force people back to work in unsafe conditions, because

So, in juxtaposing those two arguments (the lockdown is a heartbreaking violation of personal liberties / employers should be able to feed workers who don't feel safe coming back to work during a pandemic to the sarlacc pit), which have recently been almost simultaneously expressed by a single, very concentrated group and worldview, I felt a sense of bafflement....which I expressed as
