I only enjoyed segments of a few tracks and it was not enjoyable to play straight thru.

I haven't read any reviews from major publications. But these seems to be a trend among people I've chatted with about the record. I should look up how it was received by critics and such.elliseamos wrote:my opinion:durdencommatyler wrote:His other stuff is legit fantastic.VinylGuy wrote:i heard it once, and then i got into his previous albums, which i adore. Re: Albums of 2020
Friday was the second Bandcamp Day, in which Bandcamp waived their cut of all sales on their site, and as such, some artists took advantage of the occasion to drop some new material.
Mogwai scored the first season of a show called Zero Zero Zero, some sort of crime/druglord drama, I guess, and released the soundtrack. 1/2 their proceeds from the first week of sales will be donated to charities to help support the NHS and musicians struggling in the wake of Covid-19. On a first listen, it's kinda underwhelming, but I'm not a big fan of Mogwai's soundtrack work, so your mileage may vary.
Deerhoof are celebrating 25 years as a band, and have a new album out at the end of the month. They apparently also released a 16 cassette box set that reissued all of their albums and the Green Cosmos EP, as well as a tape of b-sides and rarities. That collection of castoffs, Surprise Symphonies got a digital release on Friday.
This last thing wasn't released for Bandcamp day, but I did pick it up then. Hard Times is the debut of McLaren, a musician from Toronto who was Sandro Perri's touring bassist for some of his Impossible Spaces shows in 2011 and 2012. Sandro was a lead engineer for this recording and plays on a few tracks along with some other guests. Jazzy, funky, instrumental music with prominent synth and keyboard playing.

and to clarify, my comment was only about his most recent album. I agree with you that his previous work was great.durdencommatyler wrote:I haven't read any reviews from major publications. Re: Albums of 2020
bump so we stop mistaking the 2019 thread for this one.
I agree that the Hayley Williams album is pretty good, I don't love all of it but some great tunes for sure. I love Over Yet
Hope the new Perfume Genius is good.

Enjoyed that McLaren song, Brett. I’ll check out the rest. Cool 70s / early 80s funky vibe.

Petals for Armor is excellent, and it's written, produced and performed well enough that I happily listen to the parts that I'm not as keen on because they still interest me a great deal

and I thought 8 was full of good songs but Skrillex's production was sooo bass-drum-heavy that I struggle to listen to it
