It's amazing that these fucking asshats are marching on capitol grounds with guns and crying about government overreach and democrats when their voice would probably matter more if they were to just vote their fucking king out of office.wease wrote:Was that before or after he told us there were only 15 cases and we'd have it down to 0 in two weeks? Maybe, just maybe, we would have been more prepared oh say in...fucking January or at least February...if we had a president and administration that took their roles seriously and maybe just maybe got a jump on funding, research, a plan, a fucking idea, SOMETHING....that maybe we wouldn't have been on lock down for so long. Perhaps we would have had the systems in place to ease the suffering of those contracting the virus, and the consequences of a prolonged economy shut down.
But no. Demonrats, butteremails, hail trump, guns are good.

Or at least, you know, didn't throw away a pandemic response handbook just because your predecessor, whose administration authored it as a response to the last pandemic, is black and you hate him. Or dissolved your own administration's pandemic response team because your predecessor, who is black and you hate, created the task force. Or maybe, quit trying to blame your predecessor, who is black and you hate, for "leaving you bad tests" for a virus that didn't even exist when he was in office.Strat wrote:It's amazing that these fucking asshats are marching on capitol grounds with guns and crying about government overreach and democrats when their voice would probably matter more if they were to just vote their fucking king out of office.wease wrote:Was that before or after he told us there were only 15 cases and we'd have it down to 0 in two weeks? 2172 have recovered , 343 have died.PHATJ wrote:
In Minnesota, 0.0667% of those that have contracted COVID-19 have died (343 out of 5,136 cases).
Total who no longer have covid is 2515.
343 divided by 2515 is 13.6% death rate.
(You don't divide by the whole 5136 because 2621 cases are still active and a percentage of those will die too)
Also those numbers will only stand if there's no more new diagnoses, which is not the case

Re: Anybody want a Corona?

The new coronavirus is likely to keep spreading for at least another 18 months to two years—until 60% to 70% of the population has been infected, a team of longstanding pandemic experts predicted in a report released Thursday.
They recommended that the US prepare for a worst-case scenario that includes a second big wave of coronavirus infections in the fall and winter. Even in a best-case scenario, people will continue to die from the virus, they predicted.
"This thing's not going to stop until it infects 60 to 70 percent of people," Mike Osterholm, who directs the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (CIDRAP) at the University of Minnesota, told CNN.
"The idea that this is going to be done soon defies microbiology."
Spanish Flu was a scenario 2.They said government officials should stop telling people the pandemic could be ending and instead prepare citizens for a long haul.
Three scenarios are possible, they said:
Scenario 1: The first wave of Covid-19 in spring 2020 is followed by a series of repetitive smaller waves that occur through the summer and then consistently over a one- to two-year period, gradually diminishing sometime in 2021
Scenario 2: The first wave of Covid-19 is followed by a larger wave in the fall or winter and one or more smaller waves in 2021. "This pattern will require the reinstitution of mitigation measures in the fall in an attempt to drive down spread of infection and prevent healthcare systems from being overwhelmed," they wrote. "This pattern is similar to what was seen with the 1918-19 pandemic."
Scenario 3: A "slow burn" of ongoing transmission. "This third scenario likely would not require the reinstitution of mitigation measures, although cases and deaths will continue to occur."
States and territories should plan for scenario 2, the worst-case scenario, they recommended.
"Government officials should develop concrete plans, including triggers for reinstituting mitigation measures, for dealing with disease peaks when they occur," they advised.
Lipsitch and Osterholm both said they are surprised by the decisions many states are making to lift restrictions aimed at controlling the spread of the virus.

I found myself pondering throughout the day just how fundamentally weird it is to keep pointing to Sweden (a hot mess) as the brightest and most shining example of how to manage this situation, when South Korea and Vietnam have both been substantially more successful. Like, it’s not even close.
They haven’t just been more successful than Sweden; they’ve been more successful because of lessons they learned from the fight against SARS. What would compel anyone who’s honest goal is a healthy, re-opened country to fixate on a European body bag pile, when much better and more successful demonstrations of success already exist?

Some people think this event will bring about good, needed changes. It's just as likely to bring a harsh austerity, making things worse.
Some people think this event will bring about good, needed changes. It's just as likely to bring a harsh austerity, making things worse.
With the coronavirus pandemic shutdown and recession hitting state finances hard, Gov. Brian Kemp’s budget office and the leaders of the House and Senate budget committees sent a memo to agencies asking them to develop new spending proposals for fiscal 2021, which begins July 1. The amount they should expect to cut: 14%, no exceptions.
That includes K-12 schools, which would see their state support trimmed, and state colleges. For public schools, state spending cuts could bring higher property taxes in Metro Atlanta to make up at least part of the shortfall.“The actions we have had to take as a state and as a nation to protect the health of our citizens is significantly impacting our economy and our state revenue,” the memo said.
“As you know, we have a strict constitutional mandate to create and adopt a balanced budget for our state.“Due to the rapidly changing revenue picture for FY 2021, at this time we are asking every state agency to prepare for an FY 2021 budget that includes a 14% reduction from their FY 2020 original base.“While the Great Recession of 2008 was considered to be a ‘once in a lifetime’ event, our current situation will certainly overshadow it. That is why this request is being made to ALL areas of the state budget with no exceptions.”

amen, broOrpheus wrote:Once again, without widespread testing we don't have an accurate picture. But let's say that's true. I understand the economic problems people are facing, i was furloughed myself and just recently got my first unemployment check after a month. But why isn't that a call for better infrastructure and a wider safety net? Why is the attitude "we need to go back to work " rather than "we need to take care of people who've been placed in an impossible situation?" Why is the onus on you to risk your life rather than people to help you? Doesn't that seem a little backward to you?

"For the people crying for the country to remain shut down, answer these questions:
1) How many children should starve in order to make you feel safe?
2) How many families must go bankrupt in order to make you feel safe?
3) How many wives and children must be stuck at home with an abusive husband/father in order to make you feel safe?
4) How many business owners should lose everything they've worked for in order to make you feel safe?
5) How many people are you comfortable with committing suicide from hopelessness and financial ruin in order to make you feel safe?
6) How many people have to lose their jobs, their health insurance, their life savings, and most important precious time with their family and loved ones they will never get back to make you feel safe?
Come up with an actual number, don't just dismiss the questions. Come up with the number of people that you think should surrender their lives for YOUR feelings and YOUR safety.
Does it make you feel safer knowing that your unwarranted fear and panic are costing others their livelihoods and even their own lives?
Each time you whine and complain about keeping the country shut down, remember what it's costing OTHER people for you to sit in your house watching TV, swallowing the panic narrative, and hoarding toilet paper.
Also, remember this - if the TV news had never told you to be afraid of this virus, you wouldn't have. You'd have never given it a thought, you'd have gone about your life as usual along with everyone else. You'd likely have never known there was a virus at all, you’d have thought that this was just another type of Flu. So, remember that all your fear and panic exists because you were TOLD to live in fear and panic. Regardless of whether things reopen or not, you still have the choice to stay home and not go places if you feel that is what is best for you and your family."
