Re: Anybody want a Corona?
Even if you scrape away all questions of morality, I don't see how this makes any sense politically. If even they think it's going to get worse, and the country will undoubtedly link Trump with opening up quickly, what do they think people are going to take away from that? Especially because these deaths are more likely to be happening throughout the country, rather than a specific region. I have a feeling people around the country have pigeonholed the coronavirus problem death rate as a NY problem, that it doesn't have anything to do with them. That's not likely to be the case in a few weeks.

I suspect the creator of that "fact sheet" took the absolute upper limit of the 2018 total estimate and divided it by 4. It took me 10 seconds of googling to find that.96583UP wrote:i thought they had this better under control at this pointSimple Torture wrote:Not sure if serious.96583UP wrote:surprised that the HIV/AIDs number is still so high

sad
2018 is not the latest Numbers
Google longer than 10 seconds maybe
https://www.who.int/hiv/data/en/
https://www.unaids.org/en/topic/data
Not so fast, you and you.Simple Torture wrote:The WHO estimated that 777,000 people died of AIDS/HIV-related illnesses in all of 2018. According to those numbers above, that death count will be more than 1.6 million this year. Super cool vetting of information, dude.
The 2018 upper limit was 1.1 million, which divided by 4 is 275,000 and NOT what the PHAJT sheet said which was 421,808.
The reason for the difference is that (according to your links) the numbers are adjusted using trends projection guided by CURRENT information.
So it's not the simple math thing you suspected after 10 seconds of googling
Which is too bad because apparently they were trying to get the number to be below 500,000 in 2020, but it's not looking too good

You're right, I screwed up with one of my posts--I had multiplied by 4 to calculate what PHATJ's total would be this year--which would be 500k more than the upper limit for estimates of 2018.

No, don't let this go! 2018 is the latest numbers! Re: Anybody want a Corona?
Even if the numbers on PHATJ’s chart were solid, it wouldn’t be a good argument.
Tornados only kill around 40 Americans a year. Hurricanes vary, but it’s usually between 30 and 120. According to the logic of argument that inspired that chart, those low numbers would not be evidence that sheltering in place during a tornado mitigates the death toll....but rather that it was grossly unnecessary.

it's 2018 adjusted with current other information. The only thing the bad math did was prevent him from seeing that it's not just straight up pro-rata 2018theplatypus wrote:No, don't let this go! 2018 is the latest numbers! Think of how much money Florida’s economy could save by remaining fully open during a hurricane. We can’t let the cure be worse than the disease!knee tunes wrote:Sheltering under a placeMcParadigm wrote:Even if the numbers on PHATJ’s chart were solid, it wouldn’t be a good argument.
