I talk with conservative politicians, in a professional capacity, multiple times a week. I give them respect because I'm in the professional environment, yeah, but more importantly, because most of them are able to intelligently articulate their positions on things.

I am sure that you think that.

I'm not saying I agree with them. But there are some "constitutional Republican" types who can lay out a clear case for why, in their role as (for example) State Auditor, or Secretary of State, or whatever, they pushed a certain policy through.

Most of them are not abrasive personalities, either. Quite amiable actually. Different viewpoints than me on many things, and I think their "survival of the fittest" rhetoric is rooted in a cynicism that I'll never get on board with. But they are able to humanize themselves by sharing their ideology and intelligence, and not backing away from it when pressed.

Lots of people who do bad things hold rigorous, internally consistent ideological beliefs and are able to articulate them thoughtfully and without antagonism. The architects of Chilean neoliberalism--which killed a bunch of people!--were trained at the University of Chicago. One of the more unfortunate aspects of the Trump Presidency is that it induces a pattern of thinking that it is Trump's stupidity or incompetence which is the primary problem.
