Sonic Youth's songwriting was much less writer-specific than Pearl Jam's, with many/most songs arising from group improv jams. They also didn't have a "lead" singer in the way that Pearl Jam do, though Thurston admittedly sang more often than Kim and Lee.

Even where one songwriter brought a particular idea to the group, that didn't mean they always sang on it. The classic example is Murray Street, where (IIRC) Karen Revisted was originally intended to be sung by Kim and one of Kim's songs was originally sung by Lee but they decided to switch it up during the recording process.

I'm a fan of Sonic youth. They are the first band that came to mind with 3 voices on each album. I would say the general rule of thumb is that they perform the songs they bring in (lyrically). I think it works for them. Wouldn't have worked for PJ and if the rest of the band were selfish about hoarding their best finished projects there are a lot of great songs that would have been missed.

Yea nothing has become less desirable for me on this album. Only songs i didnt initially care for have grown on me (retrograde) and the others have cemented themselves firmly as fucking great.

Im beyond the moon over this album. It has everything I want and need in pearl jam right now.

This comment makes me pretty certain I'm gonna get toasted and listen to this in the phones tonight after everyone else has gone to sleep.

This had me thinking......Who is the board's longest active member? Peeps, me, Stip, Tuolumne? I recall the two crashes prior to the '04 crash and the data was lost, but was still curious if a data scientist (or climatologist) could find out. Thx.

I go back to Master/Slave. Hard to remember when I arrived here but it was definitely a long time ago.

i might be the longest tenured. i believe i started posting back in 98-99 when red mosquito and the sky i scrape were different boards and then if im not mistaken it was scott and bigmama decided to link the two together

i know at minimum i was posting here 20 years ago cause i was still in college getting my bachelors

i have memories of interacting with TSIS in 98. I didnt even know TSIS and RM were separate sites

i may be mistaken but i think redmosquito was originally a .de site signifying it was in germany

i remember the general chat forum was a place i didnt venture and just posted in the pj forum. one few too may times veering off topic scott suggested i take a look at the general chat

the mods i can recall from back then were LT (candle avatar), hinny, bigmamma, scott. once the boards were intergrated then each sub forum had a different mods who patrolled those forums specifically, with athletic supporter, jim, and a few others that are escaping me (although thinking on that i think AS and jim were then modded after the board was recovered (see next paragraph)

then there was a board blowup and there was a separate board started and then that blew up (it may have been part of my war with ced and cement something or other) but then we all made amends and the new board was re-established. probably 2 years after that was the great invasion of balki, clark, pjdoll,shitz and sara

That's interesting to hear about the origins of this board. I was active in Pearl Jam forums from 1998, but don't think I discovered Red Mosquito until 2005.

Do you know if any of the original creators (or very first mods) are still around, or in contact with anyone RM related?

That lines up almost perfectly with me, although TTLW has risen. It really, really wants to be played loud on a good system.

Yes, that is a great comment on this album. It is very hard to pull away from it.

Interestingly, I'm still being pulled towards the record, but I'm not really seeking out individual songs, which leads me to listening to this PJ record probably less than any other record in the past (at least in terms of when it's immediately come out), but nevertheless enjoying it more than any record they've made in at least 13 (and probably 18) years. I don't know if it's because of the cohesiveness of the record, or maybe its consistency (this is a record full of 3.5 to 4.5 songs, as opposed to a bunch of 5s and 2s).

that's an interesting point, that the distance between the "great" and the "not so great" is less than usual

Yeah, I don't know why it's turned out like that. I really like the record, but I just haven't been returning to it a lot; when I am it's usually as a full album listen.
