To give another perspective on PhatJ’s predicament based on another country.

Each company that had a drop in income of 30% for a specific week (you could choose to not bill anything that week), automatically was eligible for a $100k grant. Additionally, those companies could organise (in tandem with the employees) a $750/week jobkeeper government allowance for 26 weeks.

The company I work for has many departments some of which are still running as usual, others have pretty much ceased. The company will receive the above payment for all employees in all departments to ensure its survival. As my pay is unaffected I won’t receive a cent. My other colleagues will receive the $750/week (even if they usually earned less). The people who earned more will get $750/week only.

The main driving factor was during our last recession in 91/92, the male 45-60 age group was decimated. Something in the range of 80% laid off never held a full time job again. That is what our government is trying to negate.

i’ve had like two store experiences since this kicked off and both were terrible, not because of the store but because people have gone crazy and now act like savages

i can see why some people want to carry guns

maybe that would improve this situation?

if we all carried guns, more people might prefer to adhere to lockdown rules for fear of being shot when they go outside. and if people go outside and start acting crazy they get shot and we dont have to deal w them anymore

i think this could work

this is the piece that makes me think it was the lab and not the wet market
The bats that carry the family of coronaviruses linked to the new strain aren't found within 100 miles of Wuhan — but they were studied in both labs.
why would a runty wet market carry bats for sale from 100 miles away

seems more likely that a laboratory where the disease-bearing bats are kept, and that is known for having sub-standard safety protocols, had a situation where someone got bit/scraped/peed on and since this thing is so contagious then it spread like crazy

and then they blamed it on the wet market

I’m confused. Do you:

A. Think China is incapable of having distribution networks that extend beyond walking distance

B. Think that there is so much food sprouting up in the immediate vicinity of central industrial China that they just don’t bother to go anywhere else

C. Read your own posts

D. Ever wonder if “gee I just don’t get how these Chinese people came to be selling meat from all of a hundred miles away, it’s too implausible” sounds a little racist

Here’s how a team of biologists, infectious disease researchers and biosecurity experts put it in a report published in the journal Nature Medicine: “We do not believe that any type of laboratory-based scenario is plausible.”
Meanwhile, other researchers who sifted through the genetic sequences of dozens of preserved viral samples found that the new coronavirus is a distant cousin of the coronavirus that caused the SARS outbreak of 2002 and 2003, and the coronavirus that gave rise to MERS in 2009. The virus responsible for COVID-19 has distinctive features that separate it from its predecessors by generations, according to their report in the Journal of Virology.

But none of the genetic mutations looked like ones a scientist would engineer in a lab to tweak a virus for better performance, the researchers wrote. Instead, they have all the hallmarks of the gradual accretion of changes that occur over time as a virus encounters new environments and the immune systems of new organisms.
Still other researchers examined the nearly 30,000 pairs of RNA letters in the virus’s genome and located the juncture where a mutation most likely changed its anatomical features.

The authors of the analysis in Nature Microbiology offered plausible natural circumstances to explain how it would have happened. For instance, they cited research showing that when chickens were repeatedly exposed to a harmless virus from swans, the virus developed mutations that made it capable of killing every chicken it infected.

They cited lab experiments to show how the virus’s changing shape would have allowed the organism to latch onto, infect and hijack human cells.

They detected biological strategies the virus had adopted that enabled it to spread from host to host — but just barely. The mechanism looked a lot more like the kind of hack that would evolve naturally in a coronavirus, not like the optimal solution a genetic engineer would choose.

And finally, they looked for the telltale signs of genetic tampering that would have been left behind by purposeful manipulation in a lab. These so-called reverse genetic systems are used in the making of coronavirus vaccines and treatments, and they have been described in detail in scientific reports. None are present in SARS-CoV-2, the investigators found.

McP, no one in this thread is claiming the virus was manufactured or altered by humans. You don’t need to debate a point no one is trying to make.

If you know that it was naturally occurring, then I’m just more confused. Do you think that a highly contagious disease found in local species that were captured, sold in crowded spaces, and eaten evolved the ability to infect humans naturally, but didn’t cause an outbreak through this route? It just sort of...waited? And this human-loving mutation of the disease was then discovered, collected, and studied over time by scientists...all while continuing to float around the local area and just totally not cause an outbreak? But then a scientist forgot to wear gloves and blammo? That’s the one?
