Re: Anybody want a Corona?
I don’t know that there is evidence of it naturally occurring in the Wuhan area. The horseshoe bats generally studied at the lab and the suspected source of a wide variety of Coronaviruses were from caves 1800 km away.Rob wrote:No one knows anything for sure, but no one seems to address his point. Doesn't it seem odd that they'd be researching a naturally occurring virus from the general area, but it only started infecting people when a mishap at the lab occurred?96583UP wrote:News Flash: You don’t know what actually happened

“Evidence from the sequence analyses clearly indicates that the reservoir host of the virus was a bat, probably a Chinese or Intermediate horseshoe bat, and it is probable that, like SARS-CoV, an intermediate host was the source of the outbreak.”Bi_3 wrote:I don’t know that there is evidence of it naturally occurring in the Wuhan area. Now absence of evidence is not evidence of absence, but that should at least open the door to the possibility of direct bat to human transmission, such as is detailed here based on research at the... well... I bet you’ve already guessed:Evidence from the sequence analyses clearly indicates that the reservoir host of the virus was a bat, probably a Chinese or Intermediate horseshoe bat, and it is probable that, like SARS-CoV, an intermediate host was the source of the outbreak. To ensure that future cross-species transmission events of this new virus don’t occur again in the future, it is important to identify the reservoir and intermediate wildlife hosts. The closest known wildlife sequence to SARS-CoV-2 remains the sequence from the virus isolated from an Intermediate horseshoe bat, but there were significant differences in the receptor-binding domain between the two viruses. Malayan pangolins (Manis javanica) have been suggested as potential intermediate hosts, and SARS-like viruses have been identified in pangolins seized in anti-smuggling operations in southern China, but they only shared about 85–92% homology with SARS-CoV-2. No other possible intermediate wildlife host has been proposed at this time.

Yes, that is reference to events that occurred in the past, not the current virusMickey wrote:Bi_3 wrote:You are conflating two separate things: (1) evidence the Wuhan lab was studying and manipulating bat derived Coronaviruses and (2) COVID-19 escaped from a lab.Bi_3 wrote:McP, no one in this thread is claiming the virus was manufactured or altered by humans. Oh right so you just posted it here for historical context, and when you said "it has happened before" that was purely a descriptive statement.

I'm not even sure I disagree with you in terms of content--I have no idea where it came from and do not care to learn!--but the idea that no one in this thread has suggested that China was responsible for transmission of the virus is wholly false.

You are misquoting me out of context as that statement was in reference to it leaking from a lab, not historical research efforts against similar virusesMickey wrote:Oh right so you just posted it here for historical context, and when you said "it has happened before" that was purely a descriptive statement.

I too have been reading this thread for the past six weeks so I have a pretty clear idea of what has and has not been implied, suggested, and alluded to.

Re: Anybody want a Corona?
China fucked up the handling of this virus pretty impressively and put us all at risk.
But does anyone think things would have gone better if it'd been a US pig that had the first Coronavirus?

Drove by an Applebee's in Iowa tonight. It was packed. Didn't see anyone streaming in and out with masks on. Imagine taking risks for a night out at Applebee's.
