The lead 'pattern' from Mike at the end of LB is the reason why Ed yelled "FUCK!" He simply wasn't playing it at Wrigley.

I agree with all of this but have a hard time comparing Swallowed Whole to FON.
I love both though!

I have nothing to add to the song discussion as I hang around to catch a glimpse of what these songs must sound like, but I can add to the conversation by saying that I hate Bon Jovi - with a passion - to the extent that I am angry when other people like it. To the extent that I leave the wedding dancefloor when it is inevitably played and everyone acts like they are passionate/ironic/campy singalongers. HATE Bon Jovi. So much that it makes me almost not hate Journey in comparison due to the fact that these songs are always back to back. In fact, due to this, I am officially retiring from going to weddings except for orthodox jewish ones where these songs wouldn't sniff the playlist.

On the record: if I heard plenty of PJ songs sung by another band, I probably wouldn't like them as much because they wouldn't sound like PJ.

If you are referring to my post you missed my point. Since Pearl jam sang the song I know Mutt Lange didn't write it....in a vacuum if I heard the song by an unknown artist I would think I bet Mutt Lange produced that album. It has all his post 80's hallmarks.
Maybe, and I have to admit, I did laugh at the Shania Twain reference because I could see it. But we also said Shania Twain about Unemployable. And I guess no comparison to any other artist means a damn when it sounds good when PJ do it (imo).

LTRP sounds real bad to me....like horrible...love Unemployable though....I have a feeling the love for this one is gonna confuse me like the love for FoN.
I don't *love* LTRP, but it's better than FoN (there was no part of that song that wasn't generic, and this chorus is not generic). I thought Marc Bolan and T.Rex more than Shania Twain, but there we are.

Eddie's next solo album is just going to be a one hour cover of kumbaya isn't it. Fukin' hippie.

I caught a break.

Wow, this stuff is really good.

Swallowed Whole is a standout for me. Lightning Bolt just kicks ass.

Getaway -- really good immediately
Lightning Bolt -- I can live with it, potential to grow
LTRP -- good, with growth potential
Swallowed Whole -- some parts great, lyrics are iffy, growth potential

All in all, this is a great start, because the truly wonderful songs are yet to come.

I've been bitching about Mike's playing the last few years but the solo in Swallowed Whole made me shut my whore mouth.

Really my only issue with Lightning Bolt is the presence of the words "lightning bolt."

The way Jeff's base interacts with the chords on SW is ear candy.

Agree with this.

And as was said:
Getaway = GSMF
LB = UK
LTRP = SS
SW= FON

But they're not similar in that it sounds like a copy or formulaic, just can see the resemblance.

LB is going to tear Eddie's voice to shreds, they weren't thinking about that part in the set...

Swallowed Whole is so pretty. I don't know what it reminds me of, but definitely something (or something else).

Swallowed Whole is fast becoming a highlight after a few more listens. Mike is great on it, and I'm not even bothered about Mike.

As I sit here saying I'm iffy on Swallowed Hole, as soon as I take my headphone off after my second tour through the songs, it's the one stuck in my head.
