Blood on the Tracks - on these journeys, sometimes you hit an album where it’s sort of the mic drop for the whole thing - like at that point why go any further after reaching the apex. For Dylan, there’s probably 4 or 5 of these, and Blood on the Tracks is one of these. In sound, this album could have been released in between Blonde on Blonde and John Wesley Harding (2 albums that also are like mic drops of greatness) and it would have felt seamless but also perhaps there’s a timelessness to this album that it would have fit anywhere it was placed on the journey. Is this my favorite of his so far? Probably not, but it is definitely in a group with Freewheelin, Bringing It All Back Home, Blonde on Blonde, and John Wesley Harding. That there are these 5 already is a testament to how inexplicably great this journey has been. It’s like getting that Born to Run, Abbey Road, Wildflowers... but 5 times already!

On the songs here, everything is top notch, making it hard to pick favorites and maybe more than other albums in the ether, it’s about favorites and not the greatest tracks rising to the top. They are all great. As for what I liked the best, Tangled Up in Blue is an all time favorite of his for me, but Simple Twist of Fate and Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts are right up there with it. Idiot Wind, You Are Going to Make Me Lonesome When You Go, and Shelter From the Storm were also favorites - but at the same time this could really be any of the songs on this album depending on how they hit me on that listen.

Really, how can one possibly do all this and not like it? I can’t imagine someone honestly declaring “I love Dylan but I hate Blood on the Tracks.” That’s like saying “I love driving but I hate wheels.” I mean it’s just one of those albums that is so definitive I am not sure you can have one without the other.

We should reactivate the jazz thread so you can have a 4th thing. Sony just last month put all of the out-of-print Miles Davis boxes back on sale, and I ordered the On the Corner one. Anxiously watching for shipping updates...

Thanks. I think I have said something similar in the past but having been behind in the digital age for some time and having limited funds for physical media prior to that, I really missed out on many classic albums and this is my way of experiencing them, and hopefully lending some form of communal experience with these albums along the way - especially with artists I already enjoy.

I like blood on the tracks a lot

hands down my favorite of all time..i was 9 when it came out and my older brother had from day one..it registered some time after that..
anyway, it will always be number 1 and number 2 through whatever will change over time..
