Seven O’clock is more direct and slightly less MOR than Retrograde, despite Retrograde carrying a similarly powerful message.

I’m disappointed he referenced Trump on this album. It’s cheap and unnecessary. Eddie slipped up, in my opinion and it leaves two excellent songs twisting in the wind both commercially and lyrically.

fuck Trump, I'm OK that he complicates potentially "commercial" songs with some backbone

How’s the 1975 treating you...

Edit- I’ll clarify before you try reinforcing your perceived cool kid credits and literally spell my original point out for you.

I feel that by referencing Donald Trump on this album, Eddie Vedder has slightly cheapened the quality of the bands terrific work. You don’t have to squeal “Fuck Trump” to dissent or include shitty lyrics about him in a song when you could be more subtle, which he clearly has the ability to be.

Do you not see we might be on the same side but have different ways of making a point, but Yah, “Fuck Trump”

These were not, by and large, the 'fuck trump' lyrics you might have expected. The fit in well with each songs themes and advance the point he is making. Much more adroitly than with Bu$hleaguer

Yeah, I think the Trump line in Quick Escape is a detriment. It doesn’t really add anything to the song, and it’s just....I dunno, dumb? But it’s distorted, and in one of the few songs on the album where the lyrics are a bit secondary or...maybe playful enough to absorb it.

That’s the only political moment on the album I can think of that isn’t flat out great at constructing its message.

I disagree with you, in my opinion the Trump references stand out as poor “inserts” into really solid songs. It’s all subjective though so good luck.

Ed´s voice for sure. And the song itself feels more close to that album.

all I said was "fuck Trump", and no, I don't think Pearl Jam's music is cheapened in any way by carrying that statement

I think Seven O'Clock works in spite of choosing empathy with a guy like Trump as a songwriting method, not because of it

I remember when I wanted to get a cool poster for good memories of my time at the Missoula show with the guys, and instead got this. I don't think Ed is very good at inserting political diatribe into songs. Not a big fan of Bu$hleaguer for the same reason. It is just awkward to me.

it works for me in a satisfying primal scream kind of way, although it is appropriately dismissive. Trump is too contemptible to justify a scream.

I agree 7:00 does it better

I've gotta chortle a smidge at any Pearl Jam fan feigning any sort of indignation over the political content....What band have you been paying attention to instead of Pearl Jam for the past few decades?

You could argue about how they choose to address things, or maybe how they go about it at times, sure, but, calling any reference to Trump a "cheap shot" is a ridiculous irony. If anything, they're more empathetic towards the opposing viewpoint, in a way, than they've been in the past, even if that sense of empathy is ultimately accompanied by feelings of pity
We still make records to be listened to — not that everyone will listen to a record track one to twelve in a row or side A or Side B — but we still make 'em in case somebody does want to listen to it like that, that's how we make em…
