yep, watched again and paused it before the wave shows up; it's PJ as Tarot cards, and the image before it is lots of people as what looks like a whole deck

if they don't sell that deck as merch they're really missing a trick!

Also, while Retrograde is my least favorite song on this album, it makes sense to have it as a single.

yep! I'm excited to see how the jam at the end is animated, I already like the visual style a lot; it feels so much less throwaway than the Tiny Concert video (which I thought was fun, but didn't tie in with the visualizers and that still irks me)

I really like the tiny video. Yeah, i agree that it would have been cool to have a visualizer of sorts....still, i like it.

But this one feels its going to be pretty preeeetty preeetty cool.

4th single.
3rd single. People mistakenly thought Quick Escape was a single because PJ showed the visualizer one day before the album release.

Wikipedia says it was a single, released on the 25th, two days before the album.

They released the visualizer 1 day before the album came out to whet everyone's appetites and promote the live viewing experience. People thought it was a single because it was a video, not realizing that they had visualizers for every song (minus the official videos). They all subsequently got released at midnight that same day. There's a reason why probably no one here has heard that song on the radio. Because it wasn't a single.

I don't know what to tell you. It was mislabeled, which was my original point. I mean, the song got 0 radio play and doesn't have a real video associated with it like the other singles. It pretty clearly is not something that they've pushed at any time other than releasing it the 1 day early as a teaser.

It is listed by a bunch of sources as a "single," and it has charted on singles charts (not very highly, but still). I don't think whether a song gets played a lot on the radio is what determines if it's a "single," or whether it has a music video (this is Pearl Jam we're talking about; MOST of their singles have not had music videos).

Granted, in the streaming era, the question of whether a song released before the album counts as a single seems kind of pointless; the only real difference between one or the other seems to be whether there's a press push to promote it, and it appears that there actually was one for "Quick Escape" (there was even an accompanying browser game). If Pearl Jam's digital distribution refers to it as a single (which it does!), it charted on singles charts (it did!), and there are articles all over the web referring to it as a single (there are!) ... then I don't know what we're debating.

Guess Retro makes sense as a single in terms of the general public, but, no song on the record could possibly represent them in a more bland, MOR, Dad-rock way.

They've made a beautiful, dynamic record full of creativity & life, and they're releasing the most vanilla (albeit, still decent) song on the album, IMO.
We still make records to be listened to — not that everyone will listen to a record track one to twelve in a row or side A or Side B — but we still make 'em in case somebody does want to listen to it like that, that's how we make em…
