i called my primary Dr. bc I heard antibody tests were now available through your Dr. and he said they are inaccurate and it’s unclear how long immunity lasts and the only real value at this point is if you 100% know you had it to be able to donate plasma for use in the ER and testing

i realize news articles make similar criticisms but thought it interesting to hear from the Dr. himself

At least your doctor was decent enough to say "I don't know shit" in a roundabout way. He probably told you to "drink fluids" and "get rest". Not being able to shake hands has probably cut the total time spent with patients by 25% at least. The rest of the time is usually spent using their doctors premium plan Webmd program and mumbling shit outside the room to nurses.

response was more 'they don't know shit'. this is labwork. his job is just to draw the blood and mail it off. doctors have so much product pitched to them in the modern era, a good doctor does his due diligence and doesn't waste his patients' time and money on meaningless crap. a bad doctor will just fill the order and take the fee. he is 43 years in the practice. very smart, no bullshit kind of guy.

bill gates recently said he thinks a vaccine will take 18 months

if antibody tests aren't a short term solution, then physical distancing, case tracing, and rapid testing seems like the only way that folks will be able to successfully get out of the house (at all) over the next two years; and not in the same way as before

i wonder wtf they will do with schools in the fall. it just seems inevitable there will be outbreaks and have to pull everyone back in. if offices are doing distancing, schools need to do it too. the laws of physics are the same. it's clear now this can affect children too, just in a different way that is not better understood yet

Plenty of room here, but are you sure you'd be up for a move to the southern hemisphere?

They are. Many spots in Canada have had few cases and one province had zero deaths.

Gotta say I am so scared for my US brothers and sisters right now. Your governments wasted time in getting started fighting this thing, and it sounds to me as if they've then been pretty ineffective in providing much in the way of social support to those who need it. That has to be a scary situation for many - no work, no income, no assistance, so need to "reopen the economy", but with Corona not under any sort of control this can't be anything but a recipe for disaster. Especially when you have people out there like the Governor of Texas saying "face masks are unconstitutional" and revving up the base-level fuckwits who seem to think the virus won't get them because they have a rocket launcher strapped across their shoulders.

I understand why people want the economies re-opened, I just find it incredibly sad that there's so little support out there for people that they see this as the only way forward. And that your Corona-situation is so poor that opening up can't be anything but a health nightmare (on top of the existing health nightmare you already have).

I'm in Australia and I appreciate we have a relatively small population (1/12 of the US) and of course have the natural benefit of being an isolated island nation. Still, our Government (federal and states) had a fairly measured response and acted early enough to keep a lid on things. They then stood up and provided social and economic assistance to businesses targeted at specifically being able to keep employees on and paid, even if they were unable to work. There is a 6 month long scheme in place currently where I believe 6 million people are receiving payments of $1,500 per fortnight. These payments will run from April to September for most. And this is in a country that hasn't yet hit 100 deaths.

Having this base-level security means that as a society we aren't as scared as we have been provided a real means of ensuring we can keep on putting food on the table. This allows us to see the bigger picture more clearly, which is doing what needs doing to deal with the virus. Opening the economy is important of course, and because we have decent figures we are now in a situation where we are starting to do this, with easing of restrictions across all industries. A bit of a reprieve from things is important - we are social beings after all. In my state all schools return to compulsory attendance as of Monday.

But I think we are all well aware that until there is a vaccine available opening things up again will inevitably lead to increases in case numbers. I just hope that we are able to continue our social distancing well enough to keep those numbers under control. I am however fairly confident in my Government's ability to continue to monitor things and I anticipate another lock-down at some point in the not too distant future. In the meantime though we will continue to social distance, test like mother fuckers, and then track and trace as we need to from there.

I wish you luck my Seppo friends. Wash your hands!
