Love the news footage of the guys going to the bar in Wisconsin after the court struck down the stay at home orders.

Thank god he's no longer oppressed, and can get that 1:00pm beer and pretzels the Constitution offers him.

How long do you want a state with minimal spread compared to others to stay in the shell? When is the job done in your mind? The virus isn't going anywhere.

The amount of money universities make from on campus housing is incredible. Here in WI, if the UW schools aren't able to have students on campus in the fall it'll be catastrophic.

Higgs wrote:Gotta say I am so scared for my US brothers and sisters right now. Your governments wasted time in getting started fighting this thing, and it sounds to me as if they've then been pretty ineffective in providing much in the way of social support to those who need it. That has to be a scary situation for many - no work, no income, no assistance, so need to "reopen the economy", but with Corona not under any sort of control this can't be anything but a recipe for disaster. Especially when you have people out there like the Governor of Texas saying "face masks are unconstitutional" and revving up the base-level fuckwits who seem to think the virus won't get them because they have a rocket launcher strapped across their shoulders.

I understand why people want the economies re-opened, I just find it incredibly sad that there's so little support out there for people that they see this as the only way forward. And that your Corona-situation is so poor that opening up can't be anything but a health nightmare (on top of the existing health nightmare you already have).

I'm in Australia and I appreciate we have a relatively small population (1/12 of the US) and of course have the natural benefit of being an isolated island nation. Still, our Government (federal and states) had a fairly measured response and acted early enough to keep a lid on things. They then stood up and provided social and economic assistance to businesses targeted at specifically being able to keep employees on and paid, even if they were unable to work. There is a 6 month long scheme in place currently where I believe 6 million people are receiving payments of $1,500 per fortnight. These payments will run from April to September for most. And this is in a country that hasn't yet hit 100 deaths.

Having this base-level security means that as a society we aren't as scared as we have been provided a real means of ensuring we can keep on putting food on the table. This allows us to see the bigger picture more clearly, which is doing what needs doing to deal with the virus. Opening the economy is important of course, and because we have decent figures we are now in a situation where we are starting to do this, with easing of restrictions across all industries. A bit of a reprieve from things is important - we are social beings after all. In my state all schools return to compulsory attendance as of Monday.

But I think we are all well aware that until there is a vaccine available opening things up again will inevitably lead to increases in case numbers. I just hope that we are able to continue our social distancing well enough to keep those numbers under control. I am however fairly confident in my Government's ability to continue to monitor things and I anticipate another lock-down at some point in the not too distant future. In the meantime though we will continue to social distance, test like mother fuckers, and then track and trace as we need to from there.

I wish you luck my Seppo friends. Wash your hands!
Thank you for this. :heartbeat:

Love you, buddy.

Oh shit, are verb and I on the same side of this issue? First, we were asked forced to make some sacrifices to flatten the curve, and I think pretty much everybody was on board with that. We did what they said to avoid overwhelming hospitals, giving them time to ramp up resources and add ICU/ventilator capacity.

Then weeks turned into months, and they moved the goalposts on us. Now we're waiting for a cure that's potentially years away? You think you can sit at home and collect a check from your government indefinitely, and that when the danger has passed--whatever that means--you'll just press Play and go right back to life as you once knew it? You may not have a country to go back to, not one that you recognize anyway.

If at any point you, a person gifted with all the understandings and information access the 21st century has to offer, somehow came to believe “we will have this here curve flattened by early May, and then it’ll be back to normal because once an infectious disease curve been flattened it stays flat,” please take the time to ask yourself how you ended up so divorced from the obvious.

Well, it does appear the guy intentionally slaps him with it. I think he has a right to be upset. The one guy looked like he was apologizing but it's not right to slap a towel at anyone, especially when they can't see it coming.

But I heard worse coming from Bruins fans during the Stanley Cup finals.

Early on when the writing was on the wall for the stay at home orders, did any sensible person think it was a 6-8 week one and done kinda thing? They weren't specifically for flattening the curve, either. It may have been the main driving force, but there are other benefits from the stay at home orders including reducing the spread of infection.

I’m at the “open it all back up and let people deal with whatever consequences may occur” phase. This country can’t agree on anything anymore. If you want to be the guinea pig who goes to Applebee’s, go for it. I’m gonna chill until there’s a better understanding of how safe everything is.

I also read a quote from a militia guy in Michigan who made what I felt was a valid point. It was along the lines of “If it’s OK for people to walk the aisles of Walmart, why not a church? Why not a small business, as long as they’re following the same rules in distancing, etc?” It’s already hard enough for small businesses to compete with big-box stores, chain restaurants, etc. So I say let them open. Doesn’t mean I have to go there until I feel comfortable (which will probably be a ways off).
I'm trying real hard to be the shepherd.

Walmart was essential as a grocery store and now we have reopening plans for other businesses beginning so no, his point was not inherently valid.

And if you work at Applebee’s but don’t feel safe returning to work at this time, eat shit.

As long as we’re talking about throwing other people into the fire against their will, so that we can be just a bit warmer...we’re the bad guys.
