Re: Anybody want a Corona?
I would never, EVER eat at an Applebee's. And I don't think I need to be able to see Isbell next month either.Strat wrote:You seem to be going from one extreme to the other, which is how this conversation has turned throughout the world.verb_to_trust wrote:Please, someone tell me how long I have to stay sheltered and how much hardship I and everyone around me will have to endure to eradicate this virus. I will gladly do it. Oh, you cant? The virus won? Oh well damn. Can we still at least pretend we aren't going to roll death for the next year or so. I want to at least FEEL better. Can someone please just lie to me and say there is a plan?
And im asking honestly, im sure its different in chicago, but is it really stay inside locked down or go rush your neighborhood bars and applebees? My county, granted its small, but was a hot spot early on in the country, has since relaxed the restrictions. Restaurants were doing curbside pickup and finding new ways to serve their clients. Nothing ever totally shut down. We could always go grocery shopping, go outside and exercise, and countless other "normal" activities.
I know I dont have kids, and im lucky that my work was deemed essential (and also terrifying) but im legit curious why its now become all or nothing? Many gudielines in place throughout the country are similar to where I live.

Quite often people have irrational fears. Are we supposed to save people from their irrational fears? If not, who decides what's rational?McParadigm wrote:It’s in the universal declaration of human rights? And probably the entire premise of our women’s and children’s shelter services? And also wtf?

We absolutely should save people from becoming victims of OTHER people’s reactions to their OWN fears.surfndestroy wrote:Quite often people have irrational fears. If you want to take part in a premature reopening, I don’t think you should be denied that. If a person thinks it’s acceptable to force other people to join them under threat of being denied government assistance during a pandemic, then to hell with that person. They are their parents’ great failure.
One thing I don’t get: with federal guidance and local organization, we could very easily have comprehensive lists of those workers who are determined to return to work in every community in the country inside of two weeks, along with skill set identifiers and work histories. We could then use that 15% of the workforce to strategically reopen key locations and services, and reduce the degree to which our economy is shut down...without putting anyone in a vice. We could even incentivize and glorify them for their work. Recognize their heroism. Patriots and legends.
Advocates for reopening never seem to talk about this option.

It's the same thing with the test and trace crowd. That ship sailed a long long time ago. You aren't contact tracing and isolating a spread that is already of this magnitude.

I've missed your plan, suggestion, whatever. What should we be doing?verb_to_trust wrote:It's the same thing with the test and trace crowd. That ship sailed a long long time ago. You aren't contact tracing and isolating a spread that is already of this magnitude.
Everything's perfectly all right now. We're fine. We're all fine here, now, thank you. How are you?

If now is premature, please detail what the right time to reopen is looks like.McParadigm wrote:We absolutely should save people from becoming victims of OTHER people’s reactions to their OWN fears.surfndestroy wrote:Quite often people have irrational fears. What I think many people find frustrating is the ever changing metrics. It seems to have gone from 'lets flatten the curve to as not overwhelm our medical capacity' to 'no one should be at risk of contracting Covid-19'. That's a huge change.
The province I live in, 4.6 million people had 7 new cases reported yesterday. How open should it be?

None of that frustration equates to a justification for requiring others to take the risks you are willing to take.surfndestroy wrote:What I think many people find frustrating is the ever changing metrics. Calculatedly so. I don’t understand treating this as if it’s some foggy area of uncertainty. In this country, dozens of scientifically-informed guidelines for safely reopening exist, and they’re pretty consistent. Internationally, success stories already exist. A national public discussion about how best to navigate and benchmark our reopening is literally the conversation that got cut off by this rabid stupidity. The province I live in, 4.6 million people had 7 new cases reported yesterday. How open should it be?

Re: Anybody want a Corona?
I’m pretty happy with Oregon’s reopening plan. It is measured and requires each county to meet certain requirements, present their plan, and get approval from the governor’s office before proceeding. Requirements include declining prevalence of infections (we’ve had one case over the last 2+ weeks), sufficient PPE and healthcare capacity, trace testing personnel and protocols in place at surge levels, and having isolation facilities. 28 of 36 counties in the state were approved for phase 1 reopening effective tomorrow.
I'm trying real hard to be the shepherd.
