If it's just a replay of this 15th anniversary thing, then prepare to be disappointed. It's nowhere near as good or insightful as the Vs one. Mainly due to the lack of Stone.digster wrote:I thought I was going a bit crazy, but I do think this is a repeat of something they did on the 15th anniv.

In going through, or trying to go through the 2000 NA tour bootlegs, I've been listening to Binaural a lot more as well.
goddamn, what a great album. it might even move up a spot in the ranking for me.
still don't care much for NAIS. everything else is gold. truly one of the last great albums they put out.

I am not one for having exceptional taste, but I think of the 11 Pearl Jam albums, 9 of them make my list of great albums. This one is way up there on that list. And I love NAIS and thought it was one of the best songs I ever heard when they debuted it in 1999 at Bridge School.

We should grab coffee sometime and talk about how great Binaural is overall, especially the drums, but also how NAIS kinda sucksdad wrote:In going through, or trying to go through the 2000 NA tour bootlegs, I've been listening to Binaural a lot more as well.

Re: Binaural: Official Album Thread
There’s a certain way the acoustic guitar from Bridge School paired up with Mike’s electric leads that makes the performance. When they took the acoustic riff and used electric guitar to essentially emulate it, I didn’t like it as much though I do not think it ruins the song - I just think the acoustic pairing is better.Jaeti wrote:Every live NAIS >>>>> studio NAISdad wrote:that BSB performance might be the only one i like.liebzz wrote:I am not one for having exceptional taste, but I think of the 11 Pearl Jam albums, 9 of them make my list of great albums. Re: Binaural: Official Album Thread
I'm the opposite. There is an incredible claustrophobic atmosphere to the studio NAIS that just can't be reproduced live. Binaural is actually a record where I prefer a bunch of the songs live (which is unusual for me). I generally prefer Of the Girl, Light Years, Grievance, and Parting Ways live. But certainly not NAIS, although at least it's still good live. I think Insignificance, an excellent studio track, just gets destroyed live. It's never not felt flat, and it loses the calibrated intensity of the Binaural versionJaeti wrote:Every live NAIS >>>>> studio NAISdad wrote:that BSB performance might be the only one i like.liebzz wrote:I am not one for having exceptional taste, but I think of the 11 Pearl Jam albums, 9 of them make my list of great albums. I can actually refine my thinking on this a bit more: NAIS live outdoors > NAIS live indoors >>> NAIS studiostip wrote:I'm the opposite. For me NAIS soars when it has room to...uh, soar. I'm sure we all have our own visceral PJ connections, and NAIS at an outdoor show is one of them. In that setting, it's one of those "This isn't their best song, but right this second you could convince me it is" sort of thing.
Just going to complete this exercise, because I don't think there's another album that more clearly sorts itself into songs I strongly prefer live vs. on the record.
Breakerfall – live (but both are fine)
God's Dice – studio (a lower-tier song for me regardless)
Evacuation – studio (please don't play this live)
Light Years – studio (I feel this loses some intimacy the way NAIS loses some of its claustrophobia)
NAIS – live (still great either way)
Thin Air – studio (fine either way)
Insignificance – studio (I'm on, or nearly am on, team "this is the best PJ studio recording"; it truly does get destroyed live)
Of the Girl – studio (I think)
Grievance – live (by a ton)
Rival – studio (moderate preference)
Parting Ways – studio (moderate preference)
Soon Forget – please don't play live ever again
Parting Ways – live (not fully convinced of this, good either way)

Listening this one right one
I loooove Breakerfall-Gods Dice-Evacuation....Ed´s restrained voice, the guitars mixing with eachother...the overall groove and of course, Matt Cameron.
Matt is so fucking good in this album.

I forgot how good the bridge in Light Years is...that buildup is pure Pearl Jam.

Of The Girl sounds so good on vinyl.
Jeff´s upright bass is very present.
