Pendulum and My Father's Son are the ones I'm most curious about. They could have potential. Getaway and MYM are passable, but they aren't enough to get me interested again.

Did I see somebody compare LTRP to T.Rex? I would say that's pretty accurate. The outro really reminds me of Aerosmith too.

Initial thoughts:

Getaway -

wow - i love this song. Vocal melody is the best Ed's come up with for an uptempo song since...i dunno...maybe the best he's come up with... groove is great too!

LTRP -

Has that dirty/sexy guitar feel that immediatly reminded me of the TRUE BLOOD thing - thats a good theme. I get the Black Keys comparision as well.

Lighting Bolt -

Cool song. Better than live version. Luckily the chorus is much less offensive than the live version was.

Swalled Whole -

This didn't grab me at first but it feels like a grower.

I am very impressed.... for this bad to sound this fresh, young and contemorary after 20+ years is quite a feat. It shows how much they are still influenced by their contempories even if they are 15-20 years younger.

There's definitely a 90s rock (Counting Crows etc.) feel to some of this, especially in its relatively shiny production -- even if that's much better than Backspacer. But let's be honest, there isn't a million miles between 90s rock and 90s hard rock, even... wait for it... GRUNGE. So anyone who's saying that they've completely and utterly reinvented the PJ wheel with this is wrong. Even if it takes a page from the more commercial bands of PJ's 'ilk', that's OK, because Pearl Jam invented the ilk. They are allowed to do this, as long as it works, because they wrote the rule book.

Great description for LTRP Stip!! I really love the vibe I get from this song. Total hot rod biker bar 50's greaser feel. Very refreshing.

That should frighten you as it would be odd to give out all the weakest songs in a sampler, no? I really have no idea.

basically the people who were largely done with pearl jam haven't liked it, and the people who aren't seem pretty excited by the new material.

If PJ want to rub off the grunge facade and become a widely-appealing classic rock band, I don't mind them doing it this way. I don't mind it at all.

Any coolness the song has is sucked dry by the chorus for me:(

the working theory is that these songs are being used for baseball promo spots/filler so they gave them the upbeat songs that would work well in that context.

it's catchy. I like it. Similar to Harmless, I had pegged this song in the supersonic/big wave slot and I like this one more.
