Leaves me wondering are these the high energy points of the record and is the rest all dark and moody?
Think I'd be ok with that. It's all going to come down to sequencing if this turns out to Be the case
I feel like these are all the filler tracks.
That should frighten you as it would be odd to give out all the weakest songs in a sampler, no? I really have no idea.
These won't be the worst songs, I think they're the most instantly appealing commercially. I guess you're not going to give away Infallible in a promo sampler for radio stations (or whatever this was).

These aren't filler by no means. There's far more depth and musically interesting stuff going on than anything on BS

But let's be honest, there isn't a million miles between 90s rock and 90s hard rock, even... wait for it... GRUNGE. So anyone who's saying that they've completely and utterly reinvented the PJ wheel with this is wrong. Even if it takes a page from the more commercial bands of PJ's 'ilk', that's OK, because Pearl Jam invented the ilk. They are allowed to do this, as long as it works, because they wrote the rule book.
I thought you were in the no leak club?
That's old news. I caved. Hard.

If these songs are the "weaker" songs this album is going to be wild tits.

"Grunge," as I'm sure you would agree harmless, is just a media-concocted label that has nothing to do with music anyway.

To me, what happened in the early 90s, musically-speaking, was that hard rock and punk music ditched the excess, the strippers, the private jets and all the other bullshit and started being about the music again. I don't think *any* of the music was that groundbreaking other than reintroducing some music with heart to a younger generation.

also, this wasn't a radio station sampler, it was 4 songs sent to MLB for use in post-game broadcast montages.

You can't say you don't see where the comparison is coming from though. Especially in the verses.

sounds like I'll like it.
it IS a logical extenstion of Backspacer in that it's got songs coming from a similar mindset with more interesting execution.

Or maybe they're just newer. Hopefully the former. I think they're good. L-bolt may be the only one of this batch I love. We'll see if they are peaking because they are new or if they are going to grow on me as they become familiar and are situated within the album. Could go either way based on past practice. I tried to hedge my bets in the review.

i can hear it.

i can also call it out for being lazy and a SUPER super generalized comparison. it has way more in common with Led Zeppelin than The Black Keys

the chorus melody sounds like The Beatles tho

The guitar tone and the riff in the verses sounds like it's in the same vein as Howlin' For You or a song like that. The entire song doesn't sound like Black Keys, but that main riff definitely evokes the same kind of feel.

I wouldn't mind if pearl jam put a little dirt back into thier music though, in fact I'd welcome it

I've never really viewed the band as "grunge rock". They've always sounded closer to a classic rock band to me.

right. both are just based on 12 bar blues, which is the basis for about a million songs
