I just like finding continuity errors. Do you enjoy Star Wars less b/c you know Luke's milk flips between hands at the breakfast table?
Everything's perfectly all right now. We're fine. We're all fine here, now, thank you. How are you?

I tried googling ranks. It's apparently very complicated. I could be wrong about that.
If we go by Star Trek rules -- and why wouldn't we??? -- Captain is higher than Commander.
Even by Star Trek rules a commander can be a high ranking official, like for the Romulans. It’s the same on earth, where a commander is often above captains in rank. So not clear cut.

But let’s check Star Wars directly, which places commanders above captains:

The Resistance army was distinguished by red badges and composed of six different ranks: The Lieutenant, Captain, Major, Commander, Colonel, and most importantly, the General rank, held by Leia Organa.

The Resistance navy had the same ranking system as the Resistance army, with badges blue in color as opposed to red. the General rank being replaced by the Admiral rank, which was held by Gial Ackbar, and the addition of the lieutenant commander rank, held by Nien Nunb.

OK, ANH watching on D+, jump to about 23:30. Luke takes the milk in his right hand, moves it to his left hand, the camera changes angles and he uses his right hand to pick up the milk that was already in his left hand and pours it into a cup in his left hand.

Camera cuts and the drinking cup is now in his right hand, he drinks, camera cuts, and he lowers the cup from his lips using his left hand. Then he's sitting at the table holding it in his right hand.

It's a script supervision error. You have to be watching and saying "right hand, left hand, right hand, left hand" to even catch it.
Everything's perfectly all right now. We're fine. We're all fine here, now, thank you. How are you?

I... I really wouldn't call the opening crawl a continuity error

If the movie contradicts it, I would.

This need to be in your ears

Just over forty years ago, Paul Hirsch ACE took on the monumental challenge of editing The Empire Strikes Back, the sequel to a film that not only redefined the word "blockbuster" but was also a worldwide cultural phenomenon.  True to his nature of always "Looking to the future, to the horizon.  Never his mind on where he was", Paul had not seen the film since its release in 1980...until now.  On this edition of the Rough Cut, Paul not only gives his reactions to seeing it for the first time in four decades.
