Gigaton: Official album thread

Where were you when you first listened to Gigaton ??

Mine was all messed up due to downloading the album(leak) with 15 minutes to go before leaving for work and that iTunes was set to shuffle.

Two weeks into quarantine, and halfway through a month of consecutive days spent mostly alone, in a windowless basement storage area, preparing Seattle doctor volunteers to do shifts in the Emergency Department.

Incidentally, this is the title of the B-Side for the Retrograde single.

I do like to look back through their back catalogue and find songs with roadmaps leading to other songs on new albums. With Gigaton, here's where I come down on:

DOTC - Who You Are (only in an overall, odd sense of an unexpected single)

Never Destination - Supersonic/Leatherman
Take the Long Way - Ghost/Get Right
Buckle Up - Parachutes/All Those Yesterdays

Not saying the Gigaton songs are better, just that you can pick up the influences or common musical threads from past albums in these new tracks.

I'm not sure I see Sleight of Hand and Retrograde. Where do you see the connection?

Only in the dirge-like outro. Very reminiscent of SoH for me in the wall of sound it contains.

Love this post. One thing I really love about the band getting into this stage of their career is seeing how the albums sort of relate and converse with each other. I think every album is usually in some way a reaction to the album that immediately precedes it, so Lightning Bolt fits into the equation for Gigaton, but I also feel that Yield and Binaural act as precursors or predictors of Gigaton as well. I think the breadth of Yield and how the band is stretching themselves but still very comfortable being PJ inform Gigaton, but I also think the atypical song structures and experimentation of Binaural also inform it as well. I'll take the bait and see where I land:

I guess Binaural didn't show up as much as I thought while Riot Act did. But I think the template for them tackling non-traditional song structures is directly informed by Binaural.

This album has not aged well. I really liked some of it at first, then less and less each listen and now I can't listen to any of it without cringing.

By the way, i listened to this one on sunday and its fucking great.

It’s kind of amazing to see Seven O’Clock equated to Sleight of Hand, Army Reserve, and Inside Job...but not to Down.
