Swallowed Whole is really wonderful.

LTRP is the weakest, after more listens than is healthy. But none of these songs fails.

To me it almost sounds like Backspacer was a practice for this album.
That's a good way to put it
Yeah, that, and these just seem like more complete ideas.

would you say that it is a logical extension of Backspacer?

No fucker wants an illogical extension of Backspacer.

Totally is, first four notes are verbatim.

It's like the illegitimate son of Backspacer.

I really wish the guitar riff at the end of LB wasn't drowned out by nondescript piano.

Is it me or does it seem Jeff's bass work is really the standout element of these 4 tracks. They seem to be using him a lot more in these 4.

What is the lyric in LB that ends in "Northwest"? Near the end, my favorite part of the song.

If this record is somehow average then why can't we just enjoy it without bringing up Backspacer. Wouldn't this whole experience be more fun if we just pretended like Backspacer never happened?

I think if they'd made these four tracks right after Riot Act, I'd have been surprised by how rejuvenated they sounded. And that's in spite of the fact that I love Riot Act to pieces.

The commercial quality of SW reminds of 'Accidentally in Love' by Counting Crows.

That bridge is Swallowed Whole is just begging for a Michael Stipe guest vocal . . .

i'm not a RA advocate but i see some positive kinship between SW and the best parts of RA. LB is a good upgrade on what Ed's been trying to do since LBC. i'm happy with what i'm hearing so far.
