Did you tell them that showing weakness without consequences is also a privilege?
Maybe that's White Privilege 2.0.

I can't imagine poisoning a child's thinking and making them ashamed of who they are at such a tender age. I mean, just, holy fuck.

Why does acknowledging that you have, by happenstance, benefitted from a systemic privilege necessitate shame? What an insecure and weak world view that must come from.

Slavery... Genocide... I'd say it's pretty shameful what our European ancestors did in this country. This is where our privelege began. It's weak to turn a blind eye to it and not feel some kind of shame. To travel around, all arrogant about it and selfish, like the 'Dont Tread On Me' crowd is doing during CoronApocalypse is the ultimate case / point in how arrogant white privelege can be.

8 years old is a little young, though, to be talking it up, imo.

I do not shame myself or my kids. But they're not going to walk around unaware that their black friends may be carrying a burden that they are totally unaware of.
Everything's perfectly all right now. We're fine. We're all fine here, now, thank you. How are you?

I'm not assuming, you two are commenting on the age of his son being too early for this talk. You've no idea what the kid is like and what he asked about. So putting your opinion at the end is assuming that at a later age would be any easier... we've got old men in positions of power that still don't understand the issue.

Kids where I teach don't even learn about state history until age 10, so I'm kinda using that as my guide regarding even having the cognitive ability to understand the topic...

I truly wish I'd had this experience at a younger age, would have curbed some of my worse impulses and the internalized racism I'd certainly already picked up by 8.

Eight-year-old, dude.

Also, super cool personal attack.
Shame is negative evaluation of the self. Part of parenting is teaching your children how to engage the big conversations...both within themselves and with others...and to be able to contextualize the world around themselves without it costing their own self perception.
