I think it’s fair to say LB does some treading of water, at least? I would call it their low tide...a tired-sounding record managed largely by their producer, lacking in artistic hunger and not really feeling it so much anymore. It sounds to my ears like a band with far too little pride for how far they’ve come and what they can do. A big, blustering rock record full of self-doubt, mostly hiding it but not very well. It’s like a placeholder for a Pearl Jam record, or a shadow of one. Riot Act sounded whooped but alive. Lightning Bolt sounds alive, but in stasis.

I'm pretty sure I like LB more than you do (I wrote a glowing review of it once upon a time) but I generally agree with your well-written critique.

Obviously Soundgarden on TTLW, and there are some heavy Who vibes on Who Ever Said (I don't think the name is a coincidence) and Never Destination.

I mean, if you can't hear the Petty there, I don't know what to tell you. Also, the guitar solo early in the song is very Tom.

Yeah, you can argue whether or not they did a good job with it, but to me the whole song has Tom Petty in mind. The tag at the end drives it home, but once you hear it, it's present throughout. To me, anyway.

EDIT - except for the BRY jam in the middle. That's the most PJ minute of Gigaton.

I'm certain this isn't a deliberate reference (though I know Stone and Ed are fans) but the verses in "Quick Escape" are very similar, in melody and cadence, to "Tokyo Storm Warning" by Elvis Costello

I think they just had him in mind. It's a PJ song closest to Petty in spirit, with some notes toward the end to drive it home.

There was a theory in the Superblood Wolfmoon thread that the song was about Dolores O'Riordan (singer of The Cranberries). Supposedly, she died around the time of an actual superblood wolfmoon and some lyrics could fit that narrative.

When the leak happened, I believe some heard the "Thank you Bob Honey" line as "Thank You Mudhoney," which would have been much cooler.

That is definitely what I heard

Despite it being my favourite song on the album which I’ve listened to a bunch of times, my ear is yet to hear/register this line.
