Yeah, a fair few years ago now our Prime Minister of the time finally apologised to the first nations people of Australia for past injustices. It was a great moment and the right thing to do.
Politicians had held off and advised against it for decades. I think the prevailing thought was "if you say sorry you are admitting guilt - there will be a flood of restitution/compensation claims and law suits etc etc". Well, that simply hasn't happened.
Don't get me wrong, the Government has certainly put aside large buckets of money to specifically support Indigenous Australians and their specific communities, and there is also specific money set aside to support redress activities about our Stolen Generation (which is a blight on us all), but the overall panic of a flood of legal action and claims and costs simply has not occurred.
And finally I can say that my Country did the right thing and apologised.
And this was done by a PM who (imo) was otherwise quite the tosser. He did good here though.
My feeling is that if you are solely pledging allegiance to the Flag of the US you are inciting unthinking patriotism to a symbol that may not actually represent you all. I mean do the First Nations people really as a whole feel the flag represents them? And if the flag is such an "all encompassing symbol" what's the deal with the Confederate flag? And of course pledging blind allegiance to the flag sort of disallows you to criticise or question things, does it not? I mean it is certainly a great way to bring out the "if you don't like it, fuck off" crowd.

You're absolutely correct in your evaluation of our country's blind allegiance. It is nothing more than rote memorization, as someone else stated. It's hypocricy of the highest order.
Been like this here since I was a kid, and beyond... "and Justice for all" is total bullshit!
I do like my job, though, so...
We've always had the treaty with the indigenous folks of this land - they still got pretty screwed over, but at least they had something to point back to with regards to injustices. Certainly not ideal though.

I didn't mean to make it like I was arguing against talking to your own kids about relevant issues. I was just offering my perspective as a teacher who teaches the particular age group. It also depends on how it's approached...
...kinda like the holocaust, you have to be careful how it's introduced. Many of these kids just don't have the emotional or intellectual capacity to understand the depth of it all.
From my perspective, it's a tightrope, and as someone who sees all walks of parenting philosophies and political leanings, ultimately 35-40% of our country will teach by example the racism, selfishness, xenophobia, and short-sighted views of things like 'hoaxes' and environmental conspiracy theories.
So yes! Keep trying!! We need all the young enlightened minds we can get in for any hope of a tangible future for our kids on this planet.

These are hard discussions. I have 3 young kids. My 8 year old boy can understand. My 5 year old daughter will understand when she’s 8. But my 10 year old daughter... she’s sensitive and we should all know that kids need to understand this stuff, but it’s also a case by case basis.
And I do think this talk comes before the “peaceful protest vs rioting” talk. It’s hard to understand that one unless you understand the greater context first.
My point being that people are saying it’s too young to have a talk with a white child and to let them be kids while African American (and other minorities HAVE to have the talks with their young(er) kids
