Are they the best to you because they are your favorites. Do you really believe the songs you happen to connect with are their best?
Insignificance I find maybe to be the pinnacle of Pearl Jam as a studio band, and while I like the song it isnt in my top 30.
Off He Goes is a C+ song at best, but it moves me and I connect with it. As well as Pilate. I dont think either of these songs is in their 50 best.

There is no meaningful distinction between "favorite" and "best". There is no good way to objectively determine "best".

I don't understand this. Example I cant stand WWS , but i will concede it is a great song. Meaning if Stip said it was a all timer for him. I understand what he hears.

Wouldn't that just mean it's one of stip's favorites and you get why someone would like it?

I guess the only way to put it is how would a reviewer for say Spin give a positive review for a album if they don't enjoy it. Maybe I am odd on that I can disconnect from my own likes to greatness in art even if I don't like it, and know that something I really dig might actually be awful. I thought it was a common train of thought. If it isn't that cool as well.
Pearl Jam is my favorite band of all time, but they are not one of the best 50 of all time to my ears.

I'm not sure how to engage in this comparison but I'm fairly certain the answer lies in some sort of voting exercise that involves songs that have the same track number competing against each other. Can someone organize one of these?

I get that distinction - there are songs where I recognize that both the craft and the general reception of the song may speak to a core that moves beyond whether or not I enjoy it, and vice versa

So best means... craft?

Or more offensively, "RECEPTION"

Ugh

I like this way of thinking.

Eg - Even Flow, the first Pearl Jam song I ever heard (and downloaded off Napster - Christ I'm a fossil) will forever be my favourite due to the emotional response it generated in my spotty teenage self. But do I view it as the "best"? Fuck no.

Leatherman is one of my favourites, but is it one of their best songs? No.
